An as yet unpublished letter to the editor of the NY Times....
The current maelstrom of opposing perspectives on the War in Iraq is at once confusing and frustrating. Listening to the burgeoning debate in the senate, especially amongst presumably conscience driven Republicans seeking to divorce themselves from the Bush administration, is heartening.
On the other hand conflicting reports about the efficacy of the President’s “surge” policy are suspect. The administration’s view is that some of the “benchmarks” have been met while a consensus report from sixteen intelligence agencies suggested that nothing has changed.
All this prattle is moot. Whether the glass is half full or half empty is irrelevant.
The War in Iraq is, has been, and forever will be a moral issue, a fact that seventy percent of the American people have come to realize. Unfortunately the Bush administration is unlikely to acknowledge our concerns. This is an egregious error in a so-called democracy.
