My previous diary on Ron Paul pointed out that recent campaign finance disclosures indicated that the Texas Congressman had more cash on hand at present than the tanking McCain campaign.
Well, more interesting bits of data have been dug up that suggests that, among the GOP candidates, the military overwhelmingly supports the anti-war candidate.
That's right, you heard correctly, the Republican that the military mostly supports in the 2008 presidential campaign at present is none other than the only one who supports getting the hell out of Iraq.
Here are the numbers:
52.53% Ron Paul
35.4% McCain
7.9% Romney
5.2% Giuliani
2.2% Hunter
2.6% Others

So, what does this mean? First, it means that the hoary lie that the troops support the president and his war agenda are a complete falsehood. Of course, opinion polls have always shown that to be true, but troops are now putting their money where their mouth is.
What does this mean for Democrats?
First, it screams that putting the war front and center is not only good for the country but, increasingly, good politics too.
Second, it gives us a new way to attack the GOP front runners. We should be asking why, if the troops support the president, military campaign contributions are going overwhelmingly to the sole GOP anti-war candidate. There is no way, frankly, to counter this - it destroys every premise they base their entire argument on. We should be trumpeting this information from the mountaintops. Paul can't win, but his support destroys the leading GOP candidates' credibility.
