Bush has deciced to overreach in a way similar to the Schiavo fiasco. At that time there was an air of cavalier overstepping. Bush flew in from somewhere else, and made a decree that ran counter to his rights and the rights of state. People like Bill Frist supported him. Of note is the fact that at this time Frist was a presidential hopeful. Once it became apparent what the American people thought of this intrusive decision...it was the beginning of the end for Frist and aspirations that would require a majority to support him. It is no coincidence that although the Democratic candidates have weighed in; at this moment only Fred Thompson has formally spoken out in support. They know that this is a key moment. Do they jump with Bush, or do they risk the wrath of the base by supporting the rule of law, the role of the court. They make this decision at their peril. And neither direction will ultimately do them any favors. Base vs independents and rule abiding Republicans...either way-Bush has just made their futures more tenuous.
