I live in Pickerington, OH. It's a mid-size community to the east of Columbus.
My wife and I live in a pretty nice neighborhood ($400,000 range) with our two small children. I'm a proud progressive, I care for my fellow man, and pay my taxes with pride knowing that the money is going to help more people than it will hurt. But I think my neighbors hate me.
My neighbor directly on my right blasts Sean Hannity on his radio while doing yardwork. All of his cars have some version of "GWB is the mostest awesomest ever" bumpersticker on them. The neighbor directly on my left, other than being a Michigan fan (which is a big no-no in central Ohio), also adorns his vehicles with versions of GW stickers.
The CFO of a large company lives across the street and Republican just oozes off him. Of course, his 26 year old girlfriend might okay. Tough to tell as she only arrives under the cover of darkness and disappears in the early AM hours. Another guy across the street... well... he sings in a Christian band at one of those megachurches that seem to swarm the Midwest like flies on poo. Speaking of churches, my backyard butts up against a Baptist Church.
Yup, I'm a blue speck smack dab in the middle of a sea of red.
And ever since I had my Ted Strickland and Sherrod Brown signs in my front yard, I do believe my neighbors hate me. I've had brief conversations with a few regarding general world events - and whenever it strays to the standard hot-topics, the defensiveness they throw up is astounding. Many times, I can't help myself and I press the subject and get some pleasure watching them tap dance. Funny how most of them don't really understand why they support their Grand Old Party, but they do, nonetheless.
So, I think my neighbors hate me.
