As I watched Cindy Sheehan anounce that she intends to run for Nancy Pelosi's seat it occured to me that this was a watershed moment.
Sheehan specifically announced her intention to run if Pelosi didn't move to impeach bush.
I had the sense that this marks a shift in the public perception and support for impeaching bush and cheney. Something about Sheehan's announcement caused me to see it as the 2 inch rise in the ocean that is a tsunami when it comes ashore.
I'd like to know what you think in the poll below.
Until recently, while it was clear that the vast majority of americans no longer support or approve of Mr. 27 percent as president, the question of whether he should be impeached was still a toss-up. A congressperson could credibly get away with not supporting the impeachment of bush with a variety of arguments.
No longer. I believe Cindy Sheehan's announcement marks a shift in public support for impeaching bush. The reasons for not moving to impeach have worn thin. Given the administrations malfeasance, the mendacity of bush, cheney, gonzalez, etc., the incompetence of many appointees that is readily apparent, the decision not to support impeachment calls into question a congressperson's motivations, competence, or backbone.
It is not just Cindy Sheehan's announcement, it is the sense of approval, the sense of support for the announcement. Even people who won't support her, the people who will work against her, see it as a reasonable action to take. All but the most psychotic rightwingers have to admit, whether they like it or not, whether they support impeachment, have to admit that bush and cheney have earned impeachment.
Update:
I was not clear above apparently. My question is not about Cindy Sheehan or her announcement. I think that it is the way it was handled on the local news channel that made me wonder if there was broader public support. I do not know what it was specifically, body language, intonation, etc. Cindy Sheehan's announcement was the event that raised the question in my head, not the question itself.
I think change is preceded by a subtle shift in thinking. There come a point where people quit opposing something in their head and the little opening that creates allows them to see something they hadn't considered before.
This is what my question is about. I do not think people are clamoring for impeachment at this point. I do think that more people than most think have quit opposing it in their mind. I think that creates an opening where more and more people will see it as reasonable.
