Fox News' new "documentary", Victory Or Retreat: The Surge And Politics, made me sick to my stomach. The title of David Asman's "documentary" is pretty revealing. It is an attempt to give the impression that if we stay in Iraq we will definitely win, and if we retreat we will definitely lose. Can Congress decide if we are going to win this war? If we stay, will we definitely win? What does winning even mean? Is it actually possible that we can win, according to whatever your definition of winning is?
On the flip side the Democrats want to retreat. So in other words, if the Republicans stick to Bush's plan, victory is inevitable! But if the Democrats have their way, victory will be taken from us!...right...
Now, onto the actual content in the "documentary". Throughout the documentary we are told that the surge is working. The "documentary" talks about the military victories that we are experiencing during the surge, while failing to discuss the Iraqis political crisis in dept. It seemed as if 99% of the "documentary" was written, directed, and produced by George W. Bush himself. I will let you watch the documentary for yourself to decide what you think, but here is a quick summary of the message that I heard in the "documentary":
"Bush took the fight to Al Qaeda"
"Bush knows that we need to be on offense against terrorism"
"Bill Clinton was a wimp"
"Bill Clinton emboldened Al Qaeda"
"Bush is a courageous leader"
"If we leave Al Qaeda will take over"
"Thousands of Iraqis will die if we leave"
"If we leave it will be just like Vietnam"
"The Democrats only care about politics."
"Bush is keeping us safe"
"The war in Iraq is the only reason that we have not been attacked since 9/11"
Fox has possibly reached an all-time low. They did interview some people who were against the war, but they quickly used "evidence" to "disprove" their arguements. At the end we are left with the fact that the surge is working, and congress can decide if they want to win or lose this war. If we stay, the Iraqi government can start getting their act together. If we leave, this will be Vietnam all over again.
Fox's "documentary" really shocked me. I shouldn't be shocked, since Petraeus is set to report to Congress soon. Typical Fox News propaganda.
If we leave, things are not going to get better. If we stay, things are going to get worse and worse, and hate for America is going to grow. The Democrats are not trying to prevent America from winning in Iraq. If the Democrats get their way and we leave Iraq, we will be told, by he Neocons, that it is their fault that we did not win. It's pathetic. Blame George W. Bush. He took us into a war that we can not win. Even if we "win", and Iraq maintains a stable Democracy, is that even good for America? What kind of leaders would the Iraqis elect?
