According to CNN, Fred Thompson said in an interview that he would:
push for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and would work to overturn Roe v. Wade if elected president.
Not very surprising, is it?
We have witnessed Giuliani practice the art of prestidigitation and Romney doing pirouettes as they both try to disguise or turn away from their previous positions in an attempt to court the far right of the Republican Party. Thompson’s unabashedly frank statement today shows he is solidly attempting to trump these two by giving social conservatives exactly what they want to hear, and is also likely trying to take some of the focus off of Huckabee’s second place showing in Iowa.
"I don’t think that one state ought to be able to pass a law requiring gay marriage or allowing gay marriage and have another state be required to follow along," Thompson told CNN’s John King in an interview Friday.
This is obviously what voters in the 26 states that have passed state constitutional amendments banning gay marriage want to hear.
Regarding Roe V Wade:
Thompson added that the U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion "was bad law and bad medicine."
Since he is a lawyer, and plays one on TV, do you think his opinion is worth more than SCOTUS? Doubtful...
One thing to love about his announcement though is it unequivocally shows that he is someone that absolutely must not reach the White House in 2008. If you ever begin to doubt whether there is a difference between Democrats and Republicans, just read this guy’s comments.
