Here, at last we have a Republican plan to lipstick the Iraq pig.
The AP is reporting that Senator Warner is calling on the President to reduce combat forces in Mesopotamia.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. John Warner, a prominent Republican on military affairs, urged President Bush on Thursday to start bringing some troops home from Iraq by Christmas.
Such a move would send a powerful warning to the Baghdad government that time is running out, said Warner, R-Va.
Warner said the president next month should announce the withdrawal of a certain number of troops to send a "sharp and clear message throughout the region and the United States" that the commitment in Iraq is not open ended.
"We simply cannot as a nation stand and continue to put our troops at continuous risk of loss of life and limb without beginning to take some decisive action," he told reporters after a White House meeting with Bush's top aides.
I also heard on NPR this afternoon that Warner mentioned 5000 as a good number to bring home to their families.
I guess the rest of our boys and girls can decorate a palm tree or something.
If I were the cynical sort, I'd say Senator Warner is trying to convince the 70% of Americans who are fed up with the madness that "us Republicans are not as insanely cruel and heedless of American life as you might think." Good luck with that John.
Oh, and I call him "Hollywood John" in memory of his former role as one of Liz Taylor's discarded husbands.
