"When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it—always."
Mahatma Gandhi
---
Of course, nobody can predict the future. But we know from history and life experience how people generally behave. We have observed recent events and have seen that the Republicans continue to accumulate and abuse power. And that the Democrats fail to stop them and often actually support these crimes.
Netroots to Politicians: Do the Right Thing
Many of us are heroically working to persuade elected officials to do the right thing—uphold our unalienable rights and the Constitution. And many have worked to elect better officials. As laudable as these efforts have been, they do not seem to work. Even those elected to help set our government right have been seen to aid the renegade Republican regime. Even Jim Webb voted to increase the powers of the Justice (sic) Department to violate our unalienable rights.
As unsuccessful as these efforts have been, I believe that netroots working for change through electoral politics should continue—they might yet succeed. But we have been losing these votes by such a wide margin that success appears very unlikely. But maybe not impossible.
If we fail to change the government through electoral politics, what then? Will we be fated to live under a dictatorship? Where the pale illusion of "democracy" barely hides the bald-faced brutality of an authoritarian regime? My belief is that this will begin to happen...and then it will fall apart.
Thirst For Power
Naturally, the Republican thirst for power will never be slaked. They will continue to seek and acquire more. They will, in fact, accelerate what has seemed to work for them in the past: fear-mongering, accusing patriots of aiding the enemy, disparaging our unalienable rights, violated the Constitution, and of course, lying about everything.
Then, the will inevitable make a mistake. They will cross the "tipping point". I don’t know what that will be. Perhaps some well-known popular people will be made to disappear because of their political views. Perhaps a draft will be created so the neocons can fight all the bloody wars they’d like to have us fight for them.
Tyrants Tipping Point
But because there is no limit on their power, the Republicans will extend it and abuse it until the most passive, apathetic Americans will be angry. Yes, even Americans have their limits of what they will accept.
Even the right-wingers will be angry. They like many policies we find reprehensible. But they won’t be immune when the government expands their dictatorial powers. They won’t like it a bit. And many of them have guns. They will get the chance to show how well guns protect the people from a renegade government.
But ultimately it will be numbers, not guns, that will win. Like India under the British, or Czechoslovakia under the Communists, there will be a day of reckoning. And couple of tyrants with less than a million supporters cannot rule 300,000,000 American who demand to be free.
The tyrants will step down. And they will be lucky, because we are far more humane than they are. We will not hang them from trees; we will expel them from our country and regain our unalienable rights and our imperfect, yet beautiful democracy.
Not A Rosy Scenario
I don’t consider this a rosy scenario. It will get very ugly and the Republicans will commit great evil before they fall. I still hope, but doubt, that those working the electoral system will succeed in stopping them.
On the other hand, I am convinced that the tyrants cannot succeed. They are too incompetent and impotent to win.
