I'm leaving for work, but given the anti-immigrant hysteria gripping the nation, this headline from antiwar.com caught my attention. Talk about piling-on.
Evidently the DEA issued a report in 2005 indicating that Arab terr'ists are crossing our southern border speaking spanish and establishing cells wherever Hispanics live.
Yesterday, Rep. Ed Royce of California, ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs terrorism and nonproliferation subcommittee, said the DEA document substantiates information that his committee has been given in the past year.
"Hearings I held in Laredo [Texas] last year and this DEA report show that our southern border is a terrorist risk," Mr. Royce said. "Law enforcement has warned that people from Arab countries have crossed the border and adopted Hispanic surnames. The drug cartels have highly sophisticated smuggling and money-laundering networks, which terrorists could access."
So, it's not the average poor Mexican farmer crossing who lost his livelihood because, according to Oxfam America,
"There is a direct link between government agricultural policies in the U.S.. and rural misery in Mexico," according to the report entitled, "Dumping Without Borders: How U.S. agricultural policies are destroying the livelihoods of Mexican corn farmers."
[though how many Americans could tell the difference?]
But, according to the Washington Times article yesterday, the DEA's 2005 report indicates that sophisticated Arabs working with Hispanic drug cartels.
That may be true, but why discuss a 2005 report now? The timing smells IMHO, does nothing to make us safer, and continues to stir the pot.
It's not enough that Arab-Americans have look over their shoulders, now Hispanics are potential terr'ists.
Every day another abomination.
I'll check back in later today. Just wanted to bring this to your attention.
