The right-wing celebrates Petraeus's claim that Sunni factions in Anbar have rejected Al Qaeda. As the New York Times puts it, "Other areas are following suit, he adds."
But, of course, when the Bush administration originally argued about Al Qaeda in Iraq, the organization was rejected by all Sunni factions, and only had a small base of operations in the North.
The Sunni "tribes" we are arming in central Iraq are almost inevitably linked to some of the Sunni support base for Saddam Hussein in the first place -- like these now resurgent local Sheiks, he was also a Sunni-based strong-man who ruled by force. And was also opposed to Al Qaeda.
Just saying.
