This is not a good day. After an extremely disappointing vote in the Senate, I've started to notice some curious headlines popping up in the news. In the background, I hear the faint sound of a beating drum coming from the mainstream media. As more and more writers find ways to poke at Iran and President Ahmadinejad, I fear that the march towards war with Iran has already started and we are approaching the end game of Bush and Cheney's Middle East apocalypse.
Here's a survey of some stories around the horn at some of the more notable American publications.
Gay Sex Can Bring Execution in Iran

Check out this CNN video. Now, I certainly don't support how Iran treats any of its citizens, especially its homosexual population. But doesn't this type of story just seep with a subtext of liberating the oppressed? It seems like an all too similar comparison to the treatment of Shi'ites in Iraq.
At U.N., Iranian Leader Is Defiant on Nuclear Efforts
UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad vowed Tuesday not to give in to pressure by "arrogant powers" trying to force him to abandon his nation's uranium-enrichment program and unilaterally declared that as far as he is concerned, "the nuclear issue of Iran is now closed."
In a fiery speech to the U.N. General Assembly, Ahmadinejad denounced what he called the "master-servant relationship of the Medieval Age" imposed by the United States and other leading nations through the Security Council. He expressed confidence that God would not allow the Bush administration to launch a military attack against his country and said Iran has "spared no effort to build confidence" that it wants only civilian energy, not nuclear weapons.

Let's look at some of the highlighted phrases just in this introduction. Pointing out insults to the United States? Check. Hinting at Ahmadinejad's insanity? Check. Referring to Islamist/extremist sentiments indirectly? Check.
State to cut ties with firms doing business in Iran
SACRAMENTO -- -- As Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad paid his controversial visit to New York on Monday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger moved to steal some of the spotlight by announcing that California would sever ties with companies doing business in Iran.
Schwarzenegger, who like Ahmadinejad went to New York to address the United Nations, announced in a written statement after his speech that he would sign legislation requiring California's multibillion-dollar state pension funds to divest from the country.
The move, pushed by a diverse coalition of activists who argued that the federal government has not done enough to keep multinational corporations out of Iran, puts California at the forefront of a national movement.
The bill, AB 221, which passed the Legislature with no opposition, follows the state's divestment from Sudan last year.
"California has a long history of leadership and doing what's right with our investment portfolio," the governor said in his statement. "Last year, I was proud to sign legislation to divest from the Sudan to take a powerful stand against genocide. I look forward to signing legislation to divest from Iran to take an equally powerful stand against terrorism."

This is really the full package right here. A "moderate" Governor quoted as comparing the genocide in Darfur as similar to the situation in Iran. Further, it's an attempt to show widespread support for BushCheneyLieberman's march to war.
This is a precarious situation friends. We need to stop the march to war now. The beat has begun and in the background it grows louder with every passing day.
