Rolling Stone, it turns out that Bono wanted to perform during the Super Bowl halftime show with Jennifer Lopez to raise generate support for AIDS relief in Africa. MTV, like any good corporate entity, was happy to go along since it suited their interests also, but the NFL put the kibosh on it. Why?
Because the league "didn't think the charitable cause fit with in with the entertainment-based direction of its halftime program."
Well, no wonder Rush likes the NFL so!
Seriously, I know the NFL and their players do a lot of charitable work, but I'm surprised league officials expressed their objection to this so bluntly. Here's the money quote, which is real but sounds like it's been lifted from "The Simpsons":
"We simply decided that we were going to deliver, as we do annually, an extremely entertaining halftime show. We don't believe it's appropriate to focus on a single issue."
So there you go.
