In this most pivotal election in our country’s recent history, we have seen the Democratic field get narrowed down to two great candidates. On paper and in person, both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton would make a great president, one better than John McCain and most certainly better than George Bush.
So imagine my surprise when I came across this Gallup poll:
Twenty-eight percent (28%) of [Clinton supporters] indicate that if Clinton is not the [Democratic] nominee -- and Obama is -- they would support McCain. That compares to 19% of Obama supporters who would support McCain if Obama is not the nominee -- and Clinton is.
Five words – are you f’n kidding me?
Wasn’t it just a month ago that we were praising the fact that we had, in the end, great candidates of which either one we would be proud to call our President? That we were ridiculing how brain-dead and so out-of-touch the Republican candidates were to this country’s issues? So how in the hell did we get to this, to where if a certain Democratic candidate does not get the nomination we will choose to support the Republican candidate?
Pride. Stupid, stupid pride!
Those of us siding with the Democratic Party have turned this primary race from a battle of ideas to a battle of pride. It’s no longer about how we can achieve the solutions to this country’s problems, it’s about "my guy wins or we all lose!" I swear, if we are so shallow as to let our pride get in the way of voting for the real change that this country needs, then we deserve the hell that this country will go through for a generation.
I cannot believe that we are heading down this road. Hello?! Anybody home? Think McFly, think! From the economy to health care, from the environment to the War in Iraq, there is so much crap that needs to be dealt with. So why would you rather choose the Bush-endorsed John McCain who will keep in line the same policies that got us here, simply because you want to get back at the people who stopped your candidate from becoming the nominee for President? Are you really that childish, that immature?! Are you that willing to destroy whatever hope is left for this country and its future just to soothe your bruised pride?
Regardless who gets the Democratic nomination, I will vote for him or her because I cannot bear the thought of four more years of a Republican Administration. Anybody who claims to support Obama or Clinton, yet will support John McCain if their candidate does not get the nomination, is not only NOT a supporter of either Obama or Clinton, but needs to get their head examined, fast! There is too much riding on this election to let egos and pride get the best of our judgment, which this country sorely needs now.
