I wasn't going to write about this, but it's been bugging me for a couple of days.
I like reading the paper. I like my city and I enjoy reading my local news over coffee, despite the house fires and fatal crashes. But this week I am annoyed by the Seattle Times. Here I am trying my best to stay informed about my community and the national election that we are all following, and the Seattle Times gives methis on Tuesday, on the front page.
I have a few problems with this story, but mostly it strikes me as just another example of lazy reporting and less than insightful journalism. I've been noticing it a lot more lately around here for some reason....
Again pardon my rant. But I can't believe that these are the three people the Seattle Times picked to interview about the resurgence of new voters.
The Obama supporter likes him because he's got charisma, and likens finding Obama to a religious experience.
The Huckabee supporter has never been active in politics in her life but decided now was the time, so she asked god what to do. God told her to support Huckabee so now she's organizing for him, in part to combat what she calls the "homosexual agenda".
Then there's the Ron Paul supporter who sounds the most sane of the bunch but not by much.
I just can't stand that this is where so many people get their news and all it does is perpetuate the substanceless nonsense everyone is sick of. Is it so hard to find some people in this major metropolitan city that actually know something about the policies of any of the candidates mentioned?
Not to mention none of the people interviewed fall into the range of what is truly the majority of new voters as shown by the exit polls from Iowa and New Hampshire....ugh.
Where are the stories about college students getting involved in politics? Where are the stories about our young veterans and who they want to vote for? Where are the stories about how to get involved with caucusing?
Okay I'm done...rant over.
