Looking to take a break from candidate diaries and flame wars? Then join me for an idea that I'm apparently ripping off from someplace else, "Shuffle Your Ipod" Friday!
Okay, here's the rules. You turn it on, you press shuffle, and you tell us the first 10 songs it comes up with. You do NOT get to pick and choose. It has to be random. If it picks too many songs by Winger or Air Supply it's because you have too much Winger or Air Supply on your portable music device. Make changes accordingly, but don't cheat!
Since I wouldn't ask you to do anything that I'm not willing to do myself, here goes.
- Jackass - Beck - Odelay
Odelay was where I first became aware of the concept of the "perfect album." You know, one of those albums where you just put in the CD, press play, and never have to skip a single song. They don't all have to be favorites, but they all have to be good enough that you don't want to skip them. Odelay is one such album.
- Muddy Ground - The Charlatans - Compliation CD
Janet Wilson is a local DJ who has a show on WEVL called Janet's Planet. If you're a fan of alternative music, you owe it to yourself to stream her show over the interwebs (or just tune in to 89.9 FM if you happen to live in Memphis). Her show airs Wednesday mornings from 7a.m. to 9a.m. This song is from a compilation CD that she gave to me and my wife last year. Great stuff!
- Necromancer - Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
I like the Gnarls Barkley, but the more I hear it the less I like it. I think the key to Crazy is small doses.
- If Not For You - George Harrison - All Things Must Pass
I'm 34 years old, so I always considered The Beetles to be my dad's music. Only in the last 5 years have I really come to appreciate George Harrison's music, thanks largely to his work with the Traveling Wilbury's. Now, I love all things George. Wah Wah is currently one of my favorite songs, but If Not For You is definitely one of my faves.
- Your Own Worst Enemy - Bruce Springsteen - Magic
This is a new addition. I love me some Bruuuuuuuce, but I haven't given Magic much of a listen yet. I know that Gypsy Biker a great song, but other than that I'm still not sold on Magic.
- Red Rabbits - The Shins - Wincing the Night Away
This is a track I got from a buddy of mine who lives in Austin. Every time he comes to town we swap compilation cds. Haven't listened to this one yet, but as I'm doing so right now I have to say I like what I hear.
- Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival - The Best of CCR
Most frequently this song is played at arenas or stadiums during something meant to promote "patriotism." It's generally followed by "Born in the USA."
It's like they've never listened to the words.
- Donkey Town - Mark Knopfler & EmmyLou Harris - All The Roadrunning
If you like the EmmyLou, go get this CD! I ADORE her. She doesn't get asked to play a lot of weddings, but she's got one of the most distinguished voices I know.
- Pride (In The Name Of Love) - U2 - Rattle and Hum
How appropriate that on the Friday before MLK day, this song would come up? I swear I'm not cheating! What a great run I'm having today!
- Store Bought Bones - The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers
Not my favorite Raconteurs track. That would be Intimate Secretary. Still, great song, great band! Man, did I ever get lucky this week! No Def Leppard, no Brian Adams, no Air Supply. REALLY got away with one.
Okay, your turn!
