I'm not much of a diary writer (although this is like the second time in a month. Holy shit!), but in the past few days I've felta slight but ever softly growing breeze in the political winds concerning John Edwards.
The whispers carried on that wind, as you have probably guessed from the title of this journal, are saying that it's just about time for John Edwards to drop out of the Presidential race.
Before I start rambling on about why this needs to happen (it's all pretty obvious, really), I reckon I ought to preface this whole kit'n'kaboodle by saying that I don't like ANY of the candidates running. I think they all go easily into the red on the suckometer for various reasons.
Admittedly, I like Clinton the least and Obama the best...but then, that's like saying I enjoy eating cat shit more than giraffe shit.
In other words...I may not know what I like, but I sure as Hell know what I don't like: Hillary Clinton.
That all said, the fact of the matter is this – John Edwards ISN'T going to win any primary elections. I know he's pretty much the savior of DailyKos, but let's face it...he doesn't stand a chance. His last and best hope was the upcoming South Carolina primaries and even there he's getting his ass thowmped by Obama in particular. The The most recent poll shows him at a pathetic 15%, compared to Obama's 43% and Hillary's not-quite-but-nearly-as-pathetic 25%.
If Edwards can't win in South Carolina, which I'm sure most would agree should be his strongest place to preform, then he should seriously just give up.
Why?
Because it increases Obama's chances of winning the nomination. Edwards voters apparently are more likely to go with Obama of Hillary. Much to my chagrin, I don't have a link to back up that statement; but this site alone should serve as pretty strong anecdotal evidence of that.
Even though Obama is miles ahead in the SC Primary polls, it pains me to say that for whatever reason, you just can't count Hillary Clinton out. Obama looks like he'd take Nevada...he (technically) didn't. Ditto New Hampshire.
I don't need to go over the thousands of suggested reasons why it would be rough at best and disastrous at worst for Hillary Clinton to be the Democratic nominee...especially since, as usual, the Republicans are being their ever reliable selves and appear to be picking the establishment candidate, John McCain. A man known for his ability to appeal to moderates and even Democrats.
And let's face it...If McCain is the Repuglican nominee, Democrats aren't going to attack him. We're a bunch of fucking pussies! We NEVER go below the belt because we apparently don't think there's anything down there to hurt!
I DON'T WANT ANOTHER FUCKING REPUBLICAN IN THE FUCKING WHITEHOUSE!
At this point it's becoming increasingly clear that Edwards is just siphoning away Obama's chances. It's time for him and Obama to get it on in the backroom and start making some political deals in exchange for Edwards abandoning his Presidential campaign.
When Edwards inevitably suffers his arguably most humiliating loss this coming Saturday, he had better give it up. If he doesn't, he'll be akin to Nader, only he'll have super leech powers – sucking blood votes away from the more viable candidates.
If and when he does lose, I expect a lot more people to start calling for him to drop out before Super Tuesday.
