Right now Obama is about to begin his victory speech.
I am very excited for the Democrats. And for America.
"They said this day would never come. ... They said this country was too divided...to come around a common purpose. ... [Y]ou have done what the cynics said we couldn't do. You have done what the state of New Hampshire can do in five days. You have done what America can do in this new year, 2008."
"Change. We are one people."
... "We are choosing hope over fear. We are sending a powerful message that change is coming to America."
People began chanting "U! S! A! U! S! A! U! S! A!" Really.
He mentions honesty directly. That was a well-chosen word, I think.
Now: "O! BAM! A! O! BAM! A! O! BAM! A!" Really.
Ends tax breaks for corporations who ship american jobs over seas. (!) Tyranny of Oil! Ends the war in Iraq and brings our troops home! 9/11 is not a chance to scare up (!!) votes(!) but instead ... a challenge... !
Thanks the volunteers & staff. Good. Did Huckabee do that?
Obama thanks his wife. Classy. (I'm not being facetious.)
...
"Sometimes, just sometimes, there are nights like this."
..Inherit a planet that's a little cleaner, and safer. "Beat back the politics of fear, and doubt, and cynicism." Well said. Does he mean it?
"This was the place where America remembers what it means to hope. Hope is not blind optimism. ... It is not shirking from a fight. ... Hope is the feeling in your chest that something better awaits us, if we work for it, if we fight for it." [paraphrased.]
He spoke directly about his own family story. Also nicely done. Talks about Kenyan descent as something that is only possible in the united states of America. Well done, Obama, making your story a quintessential American story.
... and back to The Beard. And I'm out.
