Today, I cry. My candidate was forced to drop out by the rigged game he fought so hard to remove. I was not even allowed to vote for him. You and I did not determine his fate, unless you happen to live in NH, IA, or SC. Big money and big media determined his fate and it makes me cry.
I do not cry out of frustration, or anger. I cry out of concern for my country. Because for all the promises of change, only John Edwards told us what that change would look like. Only John Edwards had a detailed plan to get us from here to there. Only John Edwards cared more about us than about himself.
Today, John Edwards had to end his campaign for president. He had to end his campaign because the press wouldn’t cover him. He had to end his campaign because he could not compete against "celebrity" candidates who have less to say, but more money to say it with. He had to end his campaign because, even though he won the debates, he could not win the votes. What does this say about the fate of America? What does it say about the fate of the Democratic Party? What does it say about all that "change" everybody claims they want?
Well, the media wanted a "horse race" and now they have one. Let’s all pray that the horses don’t stumble or break a leg because they are all we have now.
Hillary Clinton would be a good president. So would Barack Obama. (Hell, after 8 years of George Bush, so would I). During the entire campaign, I have not said a negative word about either one of them. My mother taught me, "if you don’t have anything good to say ...", so I held my tongue. But that is about to end.
From this point forward, these candidates better address the issues and ONLY the issues. They better "tell us" EXACTLY what they plan to do to bring about all of this "change" they are bantering. They better be clear and earnest and they better not attack one another over stupid, meaningless drivel.
Clinton and Obama have beaten a better candidate. But if they want my vote, they will have to earn it just as John Edwards did.
Today America’s progressive movement suffered a major set back, and I cry. (And no I will NOT support Nader!!!)
