It's been a LONG primary season, and it's not over, but wouldn't it be nice to take a day off? Hell, it's Friday! Iowa's done! The weekend's here! Let's celebrate a little!
Here, this should help you transition out of "candidate diary" mode. It's a little affirmation from me to you:
"Your candidate is the only one who can beat the Republicans in November. No, I don't know why more people don't understand that. Yes, I know, your candidate leads that one candidate by 8 points, and that other candidate by 12 in the new East Jesus University Likability Index Poll. No, I hadn't heard your candidate just got endorsed by the Paradise Valley Thimbleworkers Union. Congratulations. Yes, we're all very excited. All the best in New Hampshire."
Good. Now that THAT'S out of the way, let's find out more about you, the veiwer at home.
So, go get your iPod, P2, Sansa, Juke, Pilot, Zune (HA! Like anyone own's a Zune), or whatever it is you listen to your digital music on (your in-dash 6-CD changer doesn't count. Please join us in the 21st century).
Got it? Good. Okay, here's the rules. You turn it on, you press shuffle, and you tell us the first 10 songs it comes up with. You do NOT get to pick and choose. It has to be random. If it picks too many songs by Winger or Air Supply it's because you have too much Winger or Air Supply on your portable music device. Make changes accordingly, but don't cheat!
I wouldn't dare ask you to do anything I'm not willing to do myself, so here goes:
- Heard 'Em Say – Kanye West – Late Registration
What can I say. I like Kanye. I won't apologize.
- Fashion – David Bowie – Chagesbowie (Import CD)
This is off of a great little import CD I got at Planet Music many, many moons ago. Really I was just looking for Space Oddity, but I got so very much more.
- I Don't Wanna Fight – Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers – Echo
All you need to know about me and Tom Petty: My band's called "The Petty Thieves." We started as a Tom Petty cover band. 'nuff said.
- Miss U In A Heartbeak – Def Leppard – Retro Active
DAMN IT! I knew one of these was going to get in here. Shit. Well, there went my credibility. [Sigh]...fine...I'm a fan of Def Leppard. There. Are you happy now? You made me admit it. Back in high school my first girlfriend and I used to stay up all night on the phone until we saw the video for Pour Some Sugar On Me. By August f&*king Adam Curry would wouldn't play it anymore because he was sick of it, so we had to stay up until after Headbanger's Ball. If I had a nickel for all the hours of sleep I lost because of Adam Curry!
Oh, I guess the point is I liked Def Leppard a lot when I was 15 and it never really wore off. It's my secret shame.
- The Lemon Song – Black Crowes with Jimmy Paige – Live at the Greek
Audioslave seemed like the perfect mix when I first heard about it. I was all about Rage (but was getting a little tired of Zach de la Rocha's preachiness), and loved Chris Cornell's vocals with Soundgarden. But then I got the CD, and really didn't like a single song on it. What went so wrong? I still wonder to this day.
I bring this up, not to see if you're paying attention, but because this song is the opposite. I never liked the Black Crowes, and my petty jealousness as a fellow (though by his standards borderline retarded) guitar player doesn't typically allow me to like Jimmy Paige. Somehow, those guys together made some of the best live music I've ever heard!
- Get It Together – Seal – Seal IV
You either like Seal or you're a bad person. Moving on.
- Creepin' In – Norah Jones – Feels Like Home
There's one woman I could leave my wife for, and she'd be okay with it. That one woman is Norah Jones. We have an understanding. (By the way, she's allowed to leave me for Jon Stewart).
- Candy Bottom Girls – The Silence Experiment – Q – Unit
This one might take some 'splaining. It's a 'mash up' of Queen's 'Fat Bottomed Girls' and 50-cent's 'Candy Shop.' The Silence Experiment is an entire album of Queen-50 mash ups that work surprisingly well. I love Candy Bottom Girls, but my favorites are We Will Rock You in the Club, Under Pressure All The Time, and Crazy Little Pimp Called Love. Try it before you ridicule it. ;)
- Blackhole – Beck – Mellow Gold
I love Beck, but I don't like this song. I'd skip it normally, but there's a lot of stuff on Mellow Gold that I love – most notably "Truck Drivin' Neighbor Downstairs (Yellow Sweat)," "Nightmare Hippie Girl," and "Beercan." My favorite Beck album remains a tie between Odelay and Midnight Vultures.
- To Go Home – M. Ward – Post-War
M. Ward opened for Norah Jones at Mud Island in Memphis last year. I'd never heard his stuff before, but I immediately loved the guy! Norah also introduced us to Amos Lee, who I also love. Have I mentioned how much I love Norah Jones? Probably covered that already. I'll move on.
Okay, so spill it! Ten songs at random! Get goin'! Next week we can go back to calling each other "sellout" and "asshole" and whatever. I promise!
