Job Announcement for Communications Director
Democracy North Carolina is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization whose mission is to make real the promise of "one person, one vote." It is a major partner in a growing movement to win campaign-finance reforms, including public financing, and to expand voting rights and voter participation. To succeed, it uses a combination of research, organizing, training and coalition building with other progressive, reform organizations to pursue measurable goals and demonstrate the value of people working together. It has a staff of eight and a budget of about $650,000. The web site is www.democracy-nc.org. Democracy North Carolina is a small organization, and work is primarily done through a group process that identifies goals, strategies, tasks, and responsibilities for work teams. We are seeking a dynamic individual to join the staff as Communications Director. This is a unique opportunity to learn about and implement cutting edge E-Advocacy strategies and techniques, be part of a statewide campaign to hold elected officials accountable and help obtain and implement progressive voting rights reforms.
Major Responsibilities:
Develop and implement the overall communications plan for Democracy NC
Oversee and manage the overall brand identity of the organization; provide messaging assistance and technical support to staff and organizational partners.
Work with partner groups and external communications firm(s) to develop language that influences public opinion on election reform issues
Select targets for state-level organizing initiatives and lead the writing, design, and implementation of the initiatives.
Develop, maintain, and oversee all aspects of electronic advocacy, including action alerts, listserv communications, blogging, and e-marketing, including search engine optimization, blogs, rss and social networking.
Maintain Democracy North Carolina's web site
Identify, develop and manage business relationships, and oversee contracts with vendors, including web/IT consultants, printers and mail houses.
Oversee design, production and distribution of materials, reports and publications, including budget management of printing and all other communications; assure adherence to Democracy NC's message and brand.
Develop and maintain relationships with print and broadcast media in NC; act as spokesperson, along with Executive Director, for media interviews; distribute press releases and communiqués with state and national media; track media coverage and news relevant to Democracy NC.
Collaborate with partner groups to proactively create and place news stories
Qualifications
The Communications Director should be self-motivated, an excellent listener, and a strategist and organizer with a deep commitment to social, ethnic, racial, and economic justice. The ideal candidate will have a combination of skills and interests that include strong knowledge of strategic communications with the media and policymakers and a commitment to building the communications capacity of Democracy North Carolina.
Specific qualifications include:
*Minimum of 3 years professional experience in journalism and/or public relations
*Creative spirit, strong sense of commitment, and understanding of and passion for Democracy NC's issues
*Familiarity with media in North Carolina, connections and relationships, and a general understanding of the state and its unique regional differences
*Development of websites and experience with databases, email clients, and digital information technologies for grassroots lobbying, organizing, etc.
*Ability to communicate and build strong working relationships with a
diverse range of nonprofit organizations from grassroots, community-based groups to state-level policy organizations and individuals from local community activists to campaign donors and civic and elected leaders
*Willingness to travel throughout North Carolina and work irregular hours, including some nights and weekends
*Good personal organization, time management and planning skills, along with a demonstrated aptitude for taking the initiative on projects
*Ability to work well as a team member with other organizational staff, volunteers, and partner organizations
The Communications Director will report directly to the Executive Director. Democracy North Carolina's office is located in Durham, NC.
Compensation: Compensation commensurate with experience. Benefits package, including comprehensive health and dental insurance, generous vacation policy and 403 (b) retirement plans included.
