On April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh blew up a truck full of fertilizer and motor-racing fuel., The explosion killed 168 people, and 450 were injured. He was inspired by the Republican party and their anger at Ross Perot's "stealing" the election for Bill Clinton.
The McVeigh wing of the Republican party are the ones being motivated and President-elect Obama is going to have to deal with these people in order to make his administration a success.
It's not the neo-cons you have to worry about. It's the McVeighs. They're the ones who kill OBGNs and plant bombs in clinics, they're the ones who tried to blow up the Atlanta Olympics back in '96. They're the ones with the Obama monkey dolls and shouting "Traitor" and "Kill Him!" at rallies.
One thing they aren't, are neo-cons. Neo-cons are former marxists who went from one fringe to the other and still have a totalitarian state of mind they learned from their trot days. Neocons are generally civilized people who think they are extremely intelligent. These are a different breed entirely. They are as much anarchists as the people screaming at all the antiwar rallies back at the other side of the decade, if not moreso. They are armed and dangerous, and have one of their own as a governor of a state. She's currently the Republican nominee for vice president.
Sarah Palin isn't a conservative, nor is she a neo-conservative, she's an anarchist of the Timothy McVeigh variety, and you know how dangerous that is. But she has a following. She didn't prior to this past summer. The McVeightes were kind of quiet during the Bush II years. They'd been caught and were lying low, they could afford to as the the right wing was running things. McCain is old, and with one of their own in second place, it seemed possible that one of their own would be in power. Not someone like Rove who's manipulating them but a true believer in the idea of abolishing the federal government outside of the military.
With Obama anywhere from six to twelve points ahead in the polls, their worst nightmare is coming true. But they have their guns. The cry "remember WACO!" might be heard again. Obama has to deal with this soon after the election. Exactly what he should do and how he can reach out to these people is unknown as yet, at least to me. But The problem is clear, and we have to address it with finesse and understanding.
As Harvey Milk learned too late: never laugh derisivley at a lunitic with a loaded revolver pointed at you.
