Yesterday I received this missive from the Republican National Committee Victory 2008 along with a "2008 EMERGENCY MEMBERSHIP STATEMENT" asking me to donate $35 to them.
This was addressed specifically to my name. To receive this was surprising to say the least since I am registered Democratic in Queens, New York City. I shared a moment of raucous humor by reading this with my family at the dinner table. Later last night, I did some mischievious thinking... (Perhaps by posting this then other registered Dems who receive the same fundraiser-mail will respond likewise)
John McCain
Wednesday Morning
Dear Friend,
We’ve reached a critical juncture in the campaign. The Obama Democrats and their left wing, special interest allies have come together in a united front, combining their enormous fundraising arsenal. Meanwhile, the national Democrats led by Chairman Howard Dean are stepping up their cynical campaign of distortions and outright lies, and with the help of their cronies, like MoveOn.org, are raising staggering amounts of money.
My friend, the last thing we Republicans can afford is to have our hands tied behind our backs due to the fact that their candidate broke his promise to the American people and refused to accept the presidential campaign spending limit – which means they will have no limit as to what they can raise and spend.
Your support is essential right now. So please send in a generous Emergency Membership Contribution of $35,... or even more if you can afford it.
The "Emergency Membership Statement" which asks for my credit card info also contains this return message missive:
Dear John, I realize it is absolutely essential to our Party's success for us to raise at least $30 million in the next 15 days to battle back against the Democrat's massive and limitless fundraising machine.
Well, rather than toss the thing in the recycling trash, I decided to reward the RNC and John McCain for their thoughtfulness.
I taped a shiny new PENNY to the return statement, and let them also know that I was sending exactly the balance of $34.99 to the Obama campaign and to MoveOn.org and I thanked them for reminding me to do so!
And so that the RNC not profit one penny I also stuck them with the bulk postage for my response (they pleaded with me "by using your own first class stamp to return this envelope, you will be helping us save much needed funds").
Of course, this is somewhat juvenile, but having recently taken hits to our IRAs and modest investment accounts I think we're entitled to let the RNC know how much it hurts in their dire time of need. After all, beggars can't be choosers, especially when they beg for money from good Democrats like us.
