According to Lawrence O'Donnell, former Capitol Hill Staffer, The West Wing writer, and current Huffington Post contributor, Colin Powell will be ready to endorse after tonight's debate.
Story
When Colin Powell turns off his TV after the final presidential debate, he will have learned everything he is going to learn about the candidates vying to succeed his former boss, George W. Bush. Powell has made it clear that he has been thinking about an endorsement for a long time but wanted to hear more from the candidates before making his choice. It now seems beyond doubt that Colin Powell will endorse Barack Obama and thereby hammer the final nail in the coffin of the Republican campaign to hold onto the White House.
Now, I know what many people around here think of Secretary Powell and believe me I share the opinion. He did the putrid bidding of Bush when he went to UN and lied to the world about Saddam Hussein and his mythical WMD.
But from a purely political stance, from the stance of cold calculation, this endorsement is worth it's weight in gold.
Even if we among the liberal-progressive movement despise Powell for his lies, the general population still reveres him for his leadership in the first Gulf War. He has, among the masses, the aura of gravitas and toughness.
This endorsement will dominate the news-cycle for days, if O'Donnell is right.
So, what do we think?
