I am really bothered by the claim that McCain "doesn't want to raise anyone's taxes." As McCain would say, 'did you listen?' Sure, he doesn't WANT to, but he's going to be doing just that.
This isn't me trying to pull any tricks, I am going to take McCain at his word. I rewinded the internet when he stated his plan was for a $5000 tax credit, but then immediately admitted the average plan cost $5800. There's easily some number fudging there--I believe $5K is for families, $2.5K for individuals; I'm not sure how the employer split factors in; also "average plans" range from singles to large families, I'm sure. But still let's take McCain at his word and this means there will now be $800 taxed that wasn't taxed before.
For the lowest three tax brackets (10%, 15%, 25%) this will mean $80, $120, and $200 in new taxes, respectively--this $800 will be new income added, hence why it always falls under the highest bracket.
Let's couple this with McCain's tax "cuts" for those brackets and see what we get: -$19, -$113, -$319, respectively. [source: Dailykos]
If we do some basic math, this means McCain will be raising taxes on the two lowest tax brackets by $61 and $7. How can he look America in the face and say he doesn't want to raise anyone's taxes?
