Having failed to interest voters in the silliness about Bill Ayers, the Republican attack dogs are moving on to new topics, desperately hoping to salvage McCain's floundering campaign by drowning Obama in a sea of baseless slanders. So far, the thugs on the Republican side have suggested that Obama was a secret Muslim, that he hated America, that he had ties with Hamas and al-Queda and something or other in Kenya that no one has ever heard of (and which probably doesn't even exist), that he had ties to the Chicago mob, that he is a Marxist (or a communist or a socialist, depending on the day of the week, I suppose), that he wasn't born in the United States and is thus ineligble to be president, that he "pals around" with terrorists, and - my personal favorite - that he might actually be the AntiChrist. (I'm sure I have missed a few, but you get the point). Indeed, since McCain seems incapable of articulating a single affirmative reason that he should be elected, the entire campaign has come down to potraying Obama as some variety of 'the other" in order to stoke primitive tribal passions and fears among the electorate.
Given the list of what's already been tried, and the failure of any of those lies to blunt Obama's momentum, it is difficult to imagine what they could try next. How much more "other" someone can be than the oxymoronic combination of an Islamic Marxist Mobster Terrorist. (Personally, I've always thought that was an impressive list. Anyone who could juggle that many conflicting loyalites is exactly the kind of person we need to be president in these difficult times). What the hell could be left, you are thinking, that they haven't already failed to stick on this man? That's what I thought too, but you and I don't think like Republican attack dogs.
You see, it turns out that Obama has an actual friend. (Shocking, isn't it?). The friend's name is Michael Signator and he is a police officer in suburban Chicago who has worked off and on as a driver and bodyguard for Obama since his Senate campaign in 2004. Apparently, the two of them became close and remained in contact. (Not shocked yet?) Sometimes Obama visits his friend, sometimes Michelle comes with him, sometimes he and his friend work out together at the gym . . . . and that's pretty much it. That's the sum and substance of the trial balloon on this latest "scandal" which Politico floated on its front page last night. THE FRIGGING FRONT PAGE!!!!!!! Here is the story, entitled: "'Mystery Man' lends support to Obama:" http://www.politico.com/...
As you can see, there is nothing more controversial than what I just described in this article, and yet it has launched a frenzy of internet activity already. According to Google Trends (which tracks the popularity of search terms - an amazing little system, really) the name "Michael Signator" was the fifth most popular search term in the Untied States this afternoon. The headline of AOL News this afternoon is "Obama Depends on Mystery Man." Expect to see and hear much more from Faux News any moment now.
Most of you are probably shaking your heads at this point. What's the big deal? What's the point? Well, the obvious answers are NOTHING and TH$ERE IS NONE. But tinfoil-hatted pinheads who desperately seek some pretext to rationalize the deep-seated bigotry that they themselves refuse to acknowledge (a desciption that extends to an ever-increasing percentage of the remaining Republican base)don't care about facts, or logic, or reality. What they want, what they need is innuendo and gossip because their loathsome fears can only be nurtured in the dark shadows of their twisted, shrunken souls.
I'm not going to spell out where this story is headed, but the inference which the Politico article is trying to suggest seems pretty obvious, and the lunatic Freepers have already leapt to the intended conclusion. Instead, the purpose of this article is simply to let you know what's coming next, so that we can all prepare to address yet another hateful lie.
And when we do, we need to do it strenuously, loudly, passionately. It is time for all of us to stand up and tell these racist fools NO MORE! No more Lies! No more fear! No more hate!
