This is going to be a short Diary, as cartwrightdale, above, deserves the all the credit for the breaking news about the McCain campaign worker hoax, but there's a small point that needs to be highlighted and I don't see it in the comments.
The original local news broadcasts were put up on the Drudge website last night. They are still available. They are located in the second small box from the left, above the main video screen at the right of the page on this link (The main video has the updated report--ignore it for the time being)
Here they are:

Go to the second "video box" from the left along the main screen.
There are actually two local reports in this video segment (when the first one ends the next one starts).
At about the :55 mark of the SECOND broadcast, the reporter notes that the McCain campaign EMBELLISHES the report by stating the alleged (now non-existent) assailant had told the girl he intended to "teach her a lesson," presumably, as was implied, by carving a "B" into her face. The reporter then notes that this statement COULD NOT BE CONFIRMED by the police. The McCain campaign was the only source quoted for this statement: "teach her a lesson". Note, the reporter attributes this DIRECTLY to the McCain campaign--NOT to a quote by the girl herself.
So the question is, did the girl say that to the McCain campaign? Is that a real quote from her, to them? Or did the McCain campaign make it up? And, more importantly, what exactly was said between this girl and the McCain campaign? If that WAS a real quote from her, why did the McCain campaign feel it necessary to provide that information to the news media?
"Teach her a lesson".
About supporting John McCain instead of Barack Obama.
In order to inflame race hate, that's why.
