It all started as, well, not quite a joke, but as a sort of campaign of benign harassment to convince a college friend to vote. My friend Jim emailed me and some others about a pressing concern. Our friend Rickey wasn't sure if he was going to vote this year. He lives in the battleground state of Nevada, and odds were good that his vote would be a lot more vital than Jim's in Vermont or mine in Texas. And from there it snowballed as more friends of Rickey got involved and we all started brainstorming.
A thought occurred to me: There are a lot of Rickeys out there. And in this year of all years, no one can afford to sit on the sidelines. And so RickeyPAC was born all its true glory, with a website (www.rickeypac.org) and a blog.
From there it's started to snowball, with a story written by one of our founders for The Portland Phoenix. And we may go national; I'll post an update with that information if everything comes together.
So join us! We're not a PAC in the classic sense; all we want is for you to reach out to your Rickey. We've even got a sample letter for you to send. It's a great way to help get out the vote in a fun way, even if you can't walk your block or the idea of cold-calling strangers terrifies you.
Have some fun. And don't forget to vote!
