I am still in shock and I thought he would never budge. But this week My Dad became firmly planted in the Obama camp. After many ugly discussions and back and forths about supporting Obama, my Dad is finally willing to let go of his Democratic Primary hostility against Obama and has decided to vote for him.
This is not an easy feat. My father is very stubborn and just would not believe that America would vote for a black man for President.
Just so you get an idea. My Dad was a diehard loyalist for Hillary and for many months has been determined to vote for McCain. His favorite station became Fox News and every smear he heard on Fox, he would repeat and say Obama is going to lose. It would drive me crazy. Everytime I talked to him about politics, he would come up with another crazy rumor, I would simply say, whose your source, Fox? Then the fighting would beginning.
This is coming from a man that hated Fox News and thought it was a dirty word.
It was really starting to get hopeless and he was making threats that he was not just going to vote for McCain but he was going to campaign for him and buy his t-shirt and wear it proudly, that almost created WWIII in my family.
All my relatives and friends, which totals to about 30 people who are voting for Obama, my Dad was the only hold out.
Then a miracle happened, my Aunt, who usually calls once a year to check on the family called my Dad and they had a in-depth conversation about the election and she is deeply religious, although I won't go that far but she has it in her mind that Obama is the savior or Messiah sent to save the World. My Aunt always has a way of handling my Dad that is amazing. But whatever she said to her younger brother certainly registered.
All I can say is AMEN!. He finally admitted that Obama would win the election, but still kept saying that he would not vote for Obama.
Well Friday night over dinner at my parents' house, My Dad made an earth shattering revelation, he said that he would go stand in those long lines here in Florida next week to vote for Obama. We were all stunned.
I nodded my head and said THANK YOU TO THE LORD!
My Mom and I then looked at each other and as if to say FINALLY!
My Mom did her usual ribbing of my Dad, but I continued to eat, because I realized that this was not easy for this proud man.
Personally, I think his dwindling stock portfolio had a huge impact on his decision, but whatever it is we now have 31 votes for Obama amongst our family and friends.
