McCain’s in trouble. And no polls or the obligatory disparaging news clips of him or his running mate will be used here to support my conclusion. Instead, I will use the words of my evangelical Republican father which were sent to me last night in a text message. The words were succinct and poignant. But before I lend them to your eyes as comfort for an anguish Nervous System, I would like to put them in context for affect.
My father is, unbelievably, part of the 9% that supports George Bush and watches FOX, and only FOX, religiously. He reveres W. as a brave Christian patriot who protects this country from the Muslim evil doers so much so that there is a picture of him proudly displayed in his office. Yes, even today.
With that understanding, and without any complicit persuasion from me, I offer you the following message I received late yesterday evening– "I’m voting for Obama. We need change." I couldn’t believe what I was reading. Although I knew Obama’s message was motivating, captivatingly and compelling, I had my doubts but I never gave up hope for my father is an educated, pragmatic man.
My response was a simple, I love you. We haven’t spoken much in the past month or so for obvious reasons, respectfully. Thus, I can only assume what changed his mind but I suspect the choice at this late stage in the race is apparently obvious for even the most ardent Republicans.
To add insult to injury, this vote is cast in Nevada- a most win state for McCain- and unlike, my father I actively sought my mother’s vote for Obama. She too is a Republican although not the Bush supporter that my father is. Her vote will also be dropped in the ballot box November 4th with the Barack Obama’s box checked. That day will mark the first time in my Quinquagenarian parent’s lives that their Republican votes will go to a Democrat. I presume that they are not alone. Thus, McCain is in trouble.
[It's OK to dream]
