A free PDF book asks the obvious question.
The blistering new introduction to Gook: John McCain's Racism and Why it Matters asks who should be considered the traitor to America.
McCain has said that others put themselves over their country, that others are traitors - like those who refused to bomb civilians in Hanoi during the Christmas Day Bombings.
Author Irwin Tang points out that the finger John McCain points must be directed back at himself.

New Introduction to Gook: John McCain's Racism and Why It Matters
(PDF of book available for free by emailing irwinbooks@gmail.com)
The time is late. Our nation stands at a precipice. We can no longer mince words.
John McCain is a pillar of hate group activity in the United States, and he is the most dangerous man to run for president since George Wallace. John McCain has worked hard to raise millions of dollars for hate groups and racist extremists in the United States. The man who proudly stated, "I hate the gooks" in all of the major newspapers of the United States works hard to provide mainstream legitimacy to hate groups in America. John McCain employs a hate group leader as a major campaign organizer and works in alliance with racist extremists to lobby for a new war.
Yes, George Wallace, Jr., is a hate group leader. At least a hate group rallier. Wallace, the son of the famously racist Alabama governor of the same name, attends hate group meetings and gives speeches at them. He kicked off a national hate group conference in 2005, just months before John McCain announced that McCain would endorse him for lieutenant governor. Of course Wallace will not call himself a hate group leader, but mainstream Americans do. When one rallies forth KKK and other hate group leaders at the national hate convention, one is a hate group leader. And John McCain raised unknown hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars for Wallace, when there were 100,000s of non-hateful Republicans to campaign for in 2006.
Wallace’s hate group, the Council of Conservative Citizens, is an offshoot of the "uptown KKK," the White Citizens Councils, and exhorts white people to fight for their race. They encourage whites to arm themselves against blacks, believing that blacks are inherently inferior. They also laud actions, violent and not, against immigrants, Latinos, Hispanic Americans, and Asians and Asian Americans.
Richard Quinn has been a close adviser and campaign organizer for John McCain since 1999. Who else would John McCain let dress his campaign volunteers up in Confederate uniforms? Where else would John McCain locate his major Southern campaign headquarters but at Quinn’s hate group headquarters in Columbia, South Carolina? As editor of the anti-people-of-color magazine, The Southern Partisan, Quinn endorsed McCain for president, and McCain hired Quinn to run his Southern strategy. Hate group scholars like Ed Sebesta study Quinn and his "neo-Confederate" organizations; they see that Quinn and the various hate groups Quinn funds long to return America to the days of old Dixie. They want to roll back democracy and establish a white-dominated monarchy. They work towards a return to racial heirarchy, where whites rule and blacks serve. Besides defending Quinn in the mass media, McCain has paid Quinn hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not milions of dollars, for Quinn’s "services." Quinn actively works to re-create the slave world that he glorifies in his writings. After all, as the Southern Partisan argues, Jesus never said slavery was wrong.
That makes two major arms of hate groups that McCain has worked hard to employ as part of his campaign, raise money for, defend in the media, and legitimize in the eyes of Americans. He has worked extra long hours, paid money from his own coffers, provided photo sessions, flown across the country, and put his political career on the line for these two major branches of hate groups: the neo-KKK and the neo-Confederate movements.
But there is a third, rising, expanding, and powerful arm of hate groups in America. These are the racist religious extremists. Even as tens of thousands of Jewish Americans beg McCain and Lieberman to end their relationship with these hate groups, McCain continues to send his political "partner," his true running mate, Joe Lieberman, to rally forth the anti-Semitic, anti-Catholic, anti-Muslim, anti-woman, anti-gay Christians United For Israel, also known as CUFI.
John McCain pretended to separate himself from these powerful pro-Armageddon lobbyists when the American people first discovered that McCain was partnering with a hate group leader who calls the Catholic Church "The Great Whore," who believes that the only difference between a mad dog and a woman on PMS is "lipstick," who believes that a holy world war must be commenced against Iran and all Muslims in order to bring on the Armageddon, who believes that Muslims are required by God to kill Christians and Jews, and who believes that God sent Hitler to punish the Jews and Hurricane Katrina to punish sinful Americans.
But as with so many other McCain statements, his distancing himself from the bizarre Pastor John Hagee, founder and leader of CUFI, was a deception. McCain continues his support for the CUFI organization, the same one he courted, the same one he legitimized for mainstream America by speaking at their convention and helping them raise massive funds in order to continue their lobbying efforts for war with Iran. As McCain has said about the people in Iran, "Maybe that’s a way of killing them."
What is wrong with John McCain? I will ask this frankly because we are at a critical moment in world history. What is wrong with him? Is he a racist? Or is he simply full of hatred?
John McCain is not a normal American. He tours America talking about his hatred for "gooks" in the mass media, openly, for all to see his racism. He doesn’t care if he proves himself a racist by holding a rally and press conference this year (Jan. 17-18) at Richard Quinn’s hate group headquarters. He proudly flies around the nation not to seek the support of truly Christian church leaders but to hold secret meetings with racist, anti-Semitic hate preachers like John Hagee and Rod Parsley.
There is something wrong wtih John McCain.
Is it his inner rage? The rage and hatred that allows him to call the Vietnamese "gooks" and his own wife a "cunt" in public? Is it the rage and hatred that allows him to assault various people, including colleagues and foreign officials, inspiring one Republican Senator to declare that a McCain presidency sends "cold chills" down his spine?
Is it McCain’s rage that drives him to assault a lady in a wheelchair, as several witnesses noted in their reports? Is it his rage and hatred that allows him to curse out POW/MIA representative Dolores Alford on the Senate floor? Is it the fear of being discovered that drives him to kick reporters off the Straight Talk Express and to prevent them from talking to Sarah Palin? Is it some strange religious belief that Americans have a "sacred duty," as he says, to be the "New Jerusalem" and "impart our values upon humanity," much like his racist imperialist hero, Teddy Roosevelt (more on him later), that drives him to lobby for wars year after year?
Really, what drove John McCain to work for five years to bring about an Iraq War? Why did he start to lobby for an Iraq invasion at least three years before September 11th, 2001, and after that terrible day, mislead the American people by saying that the war would be "easily won" and that it would require less than 100,000 troops? An experienced soldier like him knows better. Why did he pass as fact that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction, when it was clear that this was conjecture? And why did he insist Americans would "absolutely, absolutely" be treated as "liberators" by the Iraqi people? Was it his love for the Iraqi people and his love for America that compelled him for five years to lobby incessantly and mislead the public to initiate an unnecessary war costing over a million lives?
Is it McCain’s overriding respect for women that allows him to seek out a running mate who would allow hospitals to force rape victims to pay for their own forensic rape kits and then force these women by law to have the rapist’s baby? Is it hatred, sexism, or racism that provokes McCain to vote against the Civil Rights Bill of 1990, the Equal Pay Act for women, and Martin Luther King Day? Is it hatred or racism that prompts John McCain to tell teenagers that Martin Luther King Day should be rescinded?
Is it hatred or racism that allows McCain to hire the lobbyist henchmen of terrorists and dictators to run his presidential campaign?
Is it hatred or racism that spurs McCain to support every single terrorist and dictator he possibly can as a member of Congress? To be such a "maverick" as to support Reagan-Bush-Rumsfeld administrations that armed and aided Saddam Hussein in chemical weapons attacks and conventional bombings of innocent civilians throughout the region, preparing Saddam for his invasion of Kuwait. Is it hatred or racism or both that allows McCain to support Salvadoran terrorists to the bloody end, even after those terrorists killed three American nuns and an American missionary? Even after those terrorists slaughtered a houseful of Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter, McCain bucked common sense and common morality (even in the Senate) by continuing to lobby for aid to the state-sponsored terrorists. The Senate had unanimously voted to condemn the Salvadoran government and was attempting to end aid to that government even as McCain fought to save their foreign aid package.
Is it hatred or racism that pushed John McCain to send his own money to terrorists in Central America known as the "contras"? What kind of person sends his own money to a group of terrorists who are well-known for raping children, torturing children, and killing children, and doing the same to women and men? What kind of person sends his own money to terrorists to help them pour acid on civilians’ faces, cut off their genitals and breasts and do the most unspeakable things, as witnessed by Protestant and Catholic groups?
Plus, the "contras" killed Americans. McCain paid a group of terrorists that killed Americans. I repeat. John McCain sent his own money to a group of terrorists that killed Americans.
Then he used taxpayer money to visit these terrorists in their own terror camps. What he did there, no one knows. McCain lied to America, telling them that Barack Obama wanted sex-ed for kindergarteners. In reality, Obama wanted to protect kindergarteners from sex predators. In reality, McCain used our tax dollars to pay a friendly visit to child sex predators, murderers of Americans, and terrorists. McCain paid a friendly visit to terrorists who killed Americans. While it is unclear whether McCain violated the Neutrality Act or the Bolland Amendment in his aid to the "contras," he certainly violated common American values and morality. What is wrong with John McCain? He is not a typical human being. Not a member of mainstream America. Many of us have done stupid and harmful things in our lives. But few of us have proudly committed crimes against humanity.
When John McCain says, "I hate the gooks," it is not leftover hatred from a war thirty-five years ago. John McCain’s life motto is "I hate the gooks." Those "gooks" might be the Cambodians he put at risk of genocide (more on that later). Those "gooks" might be the blacks he humiliated with his "rally around the Confederacy" campaign in 2000. Those "gooks" might be the common American whom he sees as a pebble on his path to the White House; he will lie to us, insult us with racial slurs, and then ask for our vote.
John McCain considers traitors those American bomber pilots who refused to conduct the Christmas bombings of Hanoi. But who is the true traitor? McCain supported Nixon’s offering toasts to the Chinese Communists even as they sent hundreds of thousands of soldiers to battle Americans in Vietnam. McCain supported to the very end Salvadoran terrorists who killed American nuns. He sent his own money to terrorists in Nicaragua who killed Americans. He endorsed for the Senate a man who sent military arms to far-right Iranian terrorists who killed Americans. McCain endorsed a Reagan-Bush-Rumsfeld foreign policy that created a powerful and massacre-happy Saddam Hussein and then McCain lobbied for five years to send our American young women and men to fight and die in a war against the monster Reagan, Bush, Rumsfeld and McCain created.
Add to this record of anti-Americanism McCain’s record of supporting home-grown hate groups who have a century-long history of domestic terrorism. Yes, add to this McCain’s support for groups that inspire the likes of Timothy McVeigh, and McCain’s image as "hero" twists about. John McCain has contributed more to the success of American-killing terrorists and dictators than the vast majority of people in this world, American or not.
My mother did not not want me to publish this book. She told me, essentially, to be nice to John McCain.
She didn’t say, "Be nice to him because he’s a war hero." She didn’t say, "Because he’s a long-time senator." I knew exactly what she meant though she did not say it.
I grew up in East Texas and my parents still live there. I love my hometown, but the Ku Klux Klan is still active there. Black people still get "nigger" yelled at them there. Asians still get trash dumped on them by roving bands of racists. The KKK knocked down our mailbox after my father spoke up against them. The KKK called people at home, and I believe it was the KKK that left some interesting messages on my machine during my activist days in college. The KKK holds meetings in our county. The KKK or their ilk attacked our university approved antiapartheid installation, spray painting "KKK" on it and hanging dead doves in it.
The KKK or White Citizens Council, I believe, were the ones who hung a noose on a tree in my family’s front yard when I was still a child. I stared through that noose for a long time. I thought it was for me. Maybe it was. I knew then that there were people out there ready to attack at any moment. Ready to intimidate, to smear, to assault, to demean, for whatever reason. Hatred? Racism? It does not matter at some point. I wanted it all to go away.
By electing John McCain, we usher a hate group booster into the singlemost powerful office in the world. And because the KKK, historically, are the most successful terrorists in America, we walk a dangerous path as we fight for our dignity in our own nation.
That is, because McCain has raised millions for hate groups and their leaders, those hate groups will certainly do what it takes to support him. Did the three hate activists arrested in Denver in connection with a possible assassination attempt on Barack Obama have any connections with the hate groups that John McCain has supported over the years? Or were they only encouraged by the rantings of those McCain-supported hate leaders? Did they feel that McCain had nodded in the direction of hate groups through his political and monetary support?
Were those who hung an Obama effigy this month from a tree at George Fox University in Oregon encouraged by the hate groups that John McCain supports? Possibly. As recently as the 1980s, the KKK communicated through guns and hanging effigies of Vietnamese shrimpers here in Texas. Their targets were the Vietnamese Americans living on the Texas coast. And sadly, here, the "gook" slur comes full circle.
To the KKK, independent racists, and their ilk, we are just "gooks."
"I hate the gooks," said John McCain to the mass media. "I will hate them as long as I live." It doesn’t matter who John McCain is calling a "gook." Use of the racial slur "gook" insults human beings by dehumanizing their race or ethnic group. No matter who Mr. McCain is calling "gooks," he is using racist language to express what he himself admits is a deep hatred.
The fact that Mr. McCain carries such everlasting hate within him, the fact that his rage expresses itself through physical assault, even as a senator, and the fact that McCain has sought to escalate and extend every bloody war since 1983 and has sought to start at least three or four new wars that even George W. Bush would not start. John McCain is indeed a unique senator.
One that I should be nice to.
These are pathetic times in America. Not because I have been called "gook" for having written this book. Not because I have apparently been contacted and to some degree threatened by the CCC or KKK or Richard Quinn’s people. These times are pathetic because I must in America fear a sitting Senator and his character assassins. I must fear telling the truth and documenting it and chronicling it and organizing it in a book. And this book is not a partisan book. I am not a Democrat or Republican. I have never written so much about a single person for any purpose.
This book is dedicated to the innocent victims of war and racism. No, not Saddam Hussein or Emperor Hirohito or Hitler. I must clarify for those who will certainly twist my words. This book is dedicated to people like my parents, who lost several siblings to war. To John McCain, who lost six years of his life and his health and well-being to war, imprisonment and torture. To all those who were, are, and will be considered "gooks" and killed for some righteous cause.
Before we started the bombing in Iraq, I protested. How many innocent Iraqi civilians would die because of our war? How many would die if things didn’t go quite right? A tiny minority of Americans reminded people that killing innocent people is wrong, no matter the goal. A tiny minority said that things don’t always go as planned. Remember how we were going to conquer Vietnam in six weeks? Remember how there would be few civilian deaths in Panama? Remember how smart bombs only kill evil people?
We are part of the evil, my friends. We started a war that has resulted in such mass chaos, statelessness, and civil strife that over a million Iraqis have died. No one cares much about these people. Yes, of course, we care more about our own than about others. But the fate of these faceless "gooks" are rarely mentioned in the mass media and perhaps less in conversation. And yes, it does have to do with race. Do you see that war and racism are connected twins? If you do nothing else, if you hate my guts for writing this, walk away with this understanding. Every superhero needs a "gook." And the creation of the "gook" almost invariably involves racist caricaturing.
I write this book with the most honorable intentions, and I hope that Mr. McCain and his supporters respect that. I began by writing an essay about McCain. I wished to respond to my liberal friends, who believed that McCain was the most acceptable Republican in the field of Republicans. Knowing more than my friends, but far less than I know now, I began researching an essay to rebut my friends. What I uncovered in my research had my eyes bulging in shock. I decided to serve my nation by writing this book. I am losing a substantial sum of money on this effort.
After publishing 180 pages on McCain, I realized there was more to write. I continued to uncover more disturbing information, and McCain continues to reveal more of himself. For instance, I discovered recently that McCain opposed Congress’s efforts to apologize and pay some redress to those Japanese Americans who were imprisoned in U.S. internment camps during World War II. These were American families thrown into prisons because of their race. Most of them lost their homes and their livelihoods. Some lost their lives. They lived in these camps/prisons for years. McCain believed that they deserved no compensation for the crimes our government committed against them.
Another example. John McCain lobbied for the Iraq War for years before September 11th, 2001. And after that terrible day, McCain jacked up his lobbying efforts, asking for war with Iraq (not with Afghanistan or bin Laden but war with Iraq) just days after September 11th. I wrote that McCain and others did not wish to capture Osama bin Laden because with Bin Laden’s capture Americans would feel no motivation to invade Iraq. That’s why so few troops were sent to capture bin Laden, and why the U.S. has let him live peacefully while dedicating itself to invading Iraq.
At the recent Net Roots Nation conference, I asked former Clinton/Bush anti-terrorism chief Richard Clarke about this. He insisted that bin Laden’s easy escape had only to do with Republican incompetance. But after this public interaction, I chased Clarke down and confronted him privately on the issue. He admitted to me, in rather "frank" language, that Republican priorities were not the same as American priorities. Americans wanted to capture or kill Osama bin Laden. The Republican Party was much more interested in an Iraq invasion and less interested in capturing bin Laden.
McCain continues to talk about "fighting evil" through war even as he maintains that Christianity is superior to other religions. Jesus. Yes, Jesus. What would the son of God say? Seeing how alleviating hunger and disease seemed to be one of his main missions in life, he probably would say something like, "You want to fight evil? Stop bombing children and start feeding them."
As I wrote the original version of the book, hundreds of thousands of Burmese struggled to survive in the wake of Cyclone Nargis. They needed food and medicine. They were being denied food and medicine by the Burmese military junta. What kind of people belong to this junta? McCain would call them "evil." But then why was McCain at that time employing two of that junta’s lobbyists to run his campaign? McCain is willing to hire the henchmen of the worst mass murderers in the world to run his presidential campaign and presumably his presidential administration. People like Charlie Black (more on him later). What is John McCain’s special relationship with the bloody-handed lobbyists working for terrorists and dictators?
People ask me why most Americans do not know the information in this book. This election cycle represents one of the most spectacular failures in American journalism ever. The coverage of John McCain in particular over the decades has been stunningly biased. Think about it. For months while running for president, John McCain regularly called Vietnamese human beings "gooks" in front of the best paid, best-qualified reporters in the nation. And they refused to quote him for months. When he finally climaxed with, "I hate the gooks," many journalists gave in and quoted him. When McCain admitted that he would only stop calling Vietnamese "gooks" because he did not want to feel "the fire," our best journalists ignored it.
Instead, they accepted McCain’s after-the-fact lie and excuse that he was only referring to his prison captors. Would such a lie and excuse work if he had said, "I hate the kikes"? Or "I hate the niggers"? Of if Obama had said, "I hate the crackers"? No matter who they were refering to, the speaker of these words would be automatically disqualified for the presidency by the mass media.
But this is what it means to be a "gook." Being demeaned and humiliated in public is widely accepted by both the "hero" group and the group considered the "gooks." That latter group has been beaten and spat upon for so long that they no longer fight. The former has gotten so used to beating the latter that the swing of the bat is no longer considered violence, but rather natural reflex and acceptable habit.
The rape, torture, and murder of those considered "gooks" is negligible. Violence against animals in the United States is more lamentable than, say, the deaths of a million Iraqis during the civil war we armed and sparked. There is more interest in football star Michael Vick’s dogs than in the 100,000 people killed by the death squads in El Salvador. Yes, the death squads McCain led the charge for in the Senate. When McCain says that maybe we can kill the people of Iran through cigarette addiction, it is not true news. When a hero speaks about a group of people that are considered "gooks," that hero can speak whatever words s/he wishes to speak. Almost all statements are acceptable. In fact, this hero may very well be "gookifying" the people in Iran in order to prepare our nation to invade that nation. The process of "gookification" has been so consistently exploited in this nation, it is almost second nature; those who do not participate in the "gookification" process are almost considered unpatriotic. Consequently, even those who do not wish to be a part of the "gookification" of other peoples end up being complicit in the process.
Conversely, what one is allowed to say about the "hero" is very limited, unless one is prepared to be called seditious or treasonous. For instance, a friend who does not follow politics much said to me, "When we torture people and kill innocent people, that’s terrorism too, isn’t it?" This friend is no flaming leftist, just a common sense observer. And yet these common sense questions and observations cannot be stated in the public square without some "patriotic" lynch mob gathering stones while the political mainstream watches wordlessly.
Perhaps this is why McCain can say with such confidence that there will be more wars after Iraq. That there will be more PTSD to come, as he told Floridians. Perhaps this is why he said with such confidenc in 1998-2000 that he would as president immediately start three new wars: a war in Libya, a war in Iraq, and a war in North Korea. If McCain had been elected president in 2000, the United States might today be fighting a literal world war involving the aforementioned nations, several Muslim nations, and China, which has always sent hundreds of thousands of men to fight the United States at its borders (Korea, Vietnam). Rather than earning the world’s sympathy on September 11, 2001, John McCain’s war on Muslims, pre-9/11, would have had many millions of the Islamic world cheering for the terrorists on 9/11.
McCain seems abundantly confident that he can trash the Constitution for the purpose of starting new wars. In a recent debate, McCain said that he would only consult with Congressional leaders before attacking Iran and likely starting a new war. So much for the Constitutional requirement of a declaration of war by the entire Congress and executive agreement.
I am positioned uniquely. I have been called "gook" many times in my life. Many consider me a "gook." If I lived in a foreign nation, my life would be rather worthless if the U.S. chose to invade or start a civil war in that nation. But I live here. And I pay taxes so that my nation can invade and start civil wars and destabilize and exploit nations and peoples throughout the world.
Holding an M.A. in Asian Studies and having written extensively on race, I have studied war, and I have studied racism. Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between the two. War and racism fertilize each other; at times, they are each other. If you’ve ever been called "gook" or "nigger" or "spic" or "kike" or even "cracker" you know this in your heart.
The most dangerous leaders of the world combine a racist attitude with a lust for war. Among these racially-biased war hawks, the worst are those who consider themselves "heroes": those ready to kill all those "gook" villains and "gook" civilians for a mighty cause. Is John McCain our hero?
May God bless America.
