I am truly scared that most people just want to be left alone, they don't think anything's wrong with the way things are, that if they're a good person, that's all that really matters in this world, and so they don't want change, and will vote for McCain.
I had trouble falling asleep last night because I am truly scared that most people just want to be left alone, they don't think anything's wrong with the way things are, that if they're a good person, that's all that really matters in this world, and so they don't want change, and will vote for McCain. After all, we live in the greatest nation on earth, despite the past 8 years, and the country has a decent history, if you believe what you learned and school and watch on the TV.
I am reminded of the time I was called for jury duty in 2001, when I lived in Pensacola, Florida. We were required to park in a lot maybe half a mile away from the courthouse and get on a shuttle. The woman in front of me was talking with her friend about how she didn't have time to be a juror, for what specific reasons I can't recall, but from her overall conversation, I picked up that she didn't work, and that she was not interested in politics.
"The only reason that I got picked for jury duty is because I registered to vote. I haven't voted in years, but my husband made me register in 2000 so that Al Gore wouldn't get elected."
I was truly flabergasted. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, since even with the large amount of people registered to vote this time around, it still doesn't match with the amount of people who could actually vote. What surprised me the most is that she either didn't care to vote, didn't educate herself on who she should vote for, and just blindly voted for who her husband wanted her to vote for.
If you remember, the TV networks predicted (incorrectly) that Florida was going to go to Al Gore in 2000, but this was before voting had ended in the three westernmost counties in Florida (one of which I lived in). Those votes swung Florida from blue to red.
The latest polls show Obama leading in Florida. I just hope the woman who I heard on the bus that day has maybe had a change of heart since 2001.
