Watch out rural Pennsylvania - a black man is coming for your guns!
It must be true because the NRA says it's so. From the Leader Times:
A number of Armstrong County gun owners apparently agree with the The National Rifle Association's position: Barack Obama is "...the most anti-gun presidential candidate in American history." With that thought in mind, many gun owners are "stocking up" on guns and ammo in anticipation of gun bans should Obama win the presidential election next Tuesday.
More scary stuff below the fold.
That's right! The NRA wants you to be afraid. Very afraid. No need to learn the truth: Back in late September, CBS refuted the NRA's claims in an article that linked to an Obama radio ad and this statement from the candidate:
"The bottom line is this. If you’ve got a rifle, you’ve got a shotgun, you’ve got a gun in your house, I’m not taking it away," Obama said earlier this month in Pennsylvania. "Alright? So they can keep on talking about it, but this is just not true."
Of course that little thing called truth doesn't stop extremists like NRA President Wayne LaPierre, who sent mailers that stated Obama has a "deep-rooted hatred of firearm freedoms."
Yesterday, CNN featured an article by Stuart Rothenberg and Nathan L. Gonzales of the Rothenberg Political Report that detailed an RNC effort to raise "an issue that some strategists believe has mistakenly been underplayed by the McCain campaign."
If Barack Obama becomes president, your Second Amendment right to defend yourself could be in danger. In fact, in Illinois, Obama voted to prosecute law-abiding citizens who used a gun to defend themselves or their families," says a narrator in the RNC spot.
"Obama supports local governments to ban guns," the radio ad continues. "Obama wants to license and register gun owners. Obama opposes judges who protect our Second Amendment right."
Rothenberg and Gonzales speculated that the ad, while surely reasonating with conservative Republicans, could be targeted at conservative Democrats, "many of whom have leaned toward Obama recently because of economic fears and uncertainty but surely are closer to the GOP's positions on cultural issues."
Listen folks. Obama is not taking away the guns of law-abiding citizens. In the Philadelphia primary debate he said, “I have never favored an all-out ban on handguns. What I think we can provide is common-sense approaches to the issue of illegal guns that are ending up on the streets.”
From an article published in April by Politico's Kenneth Vogel (link goes to Yahoo News):
A white paper on his website states: “As a former constitutional law professor, Barack Obama … greatly respects the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms” as well as “the passion that hunters and anglers have for their sport.” It says: “He will protect the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, transport and use guns for the purposes of hunting and target shooting.”
But Randy Atkinson, NRA committee chairman for Armstrong County, Penn., told the Leader Times Obama intends to implement laws like those in effect in Great Britain.
In that country, it is nearly impossible for ordinary ciitzens to own a firearm and there is a total ban on all handguns. Atkinson said he feels that Armstrong County gun owners are afraid of an Obama presidency.... Besides that, in my opinion the guy is a Marxist and his ideas would devastate our economy."
Arm yourself with the truth for this last push, people. The opposition is introducing these arguments late in the game in hopes we won't have enough time to get the real story out. Let's show 'em different this time.
