If anyone was worried that Barack might be telling us what we wanted to hear just to get elected, then your fears are now laid to rest.
On the front page of the Huffington Post, is a link to the Obama Transition Project ethics statement that the members of Obama's transition team must sign before they may work on the team. It is an ethics pledge that illuminates the deep convictions that underlie the man who will be our President.
The first paragraph.
I will disqualify myself from involvement in any particular Obama Transition Project matter which to my knowledge may directly conflict with a financial interest of an immediate family member, partner, client, or other individual or organization with which I have had a business relationship within the past 12 months.
Keep in mind that the people who will be on this team are in essence recommending, vetting and implementing a new governance structure. Everything from appointments to the policies that will be pursued by an Obama administration, will be considered by them, and this document is telling them that they may expect nothing in return.
I will disqualify myself from involvement in any particular transition matter if I have engaged in regulated lobbying activities with respect to such matter, as defined by the Lobbying Disclosure Act, within the previous 12 months.
I have always been proud to be an Obama supporter. Though initially I was a tad suspicious of his cautious record in the Senate. Today, after seeing this document, I am even more sure that if we continue to support the Obama presidency once he has been elected, we will truly transform the worst of American capitalist democracy into a more just, humane, and sane system of which we can again be proud to support.
