With all the talk about Obama and his "spread the wealth" Marxist rhetoric, I suddenly realized, with a sudden and horrifying clarity that the State of Iowa, as well as numerous other states, are in fact socialist states! The argument being put forth by those who claim Obama's plan to give a tax break to the bottom 95% of the nation, while either keeping the tax rate untouched or raising it for the top 5% of the wealth pyramid, is that it’s a form of "wealth distribution,” which "punishes" the wealthy for their success and "rewards" the less successful. Quite often these criticisms are accompanied by the famous Marxist slogan, "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need."
How does this relate to Iowa, you ask? If one peruses the Tax Foundation's "Federal Taxes Paid vs. Federal Spending Received by State, 1981-2005” report, you will see that in 2005, Iowa received $1.10 in federal aid for every $1.00 paid in federal taxes. This is the 21st straight year that the state has received this “welfare.” But that’s not to say Iowa is the worst deadbeat in the union. That title belongs to New Mexico, which receives a staggering $2.02 in federal aid for every $1.00 it pays in federal taxes. New Mexico barely beat out the second place finisher, Mississippi, which collects $2.02 per dollar collected. Iowa’s rate has them in 24th place, barely entering welfare territory.
Here’s the top 10 list:
New Mexico (1) $2.03
Mississippi (2) $2.02
Alaska (3) $1.84
Louisiana (4) $1.78
W. Virginia (5) $1.76
North Dakota (6) $1.68
Alabama (7) $1.66
South Dakota (8) $1.53
Kentucky (9) $1.51
Virginia (10) $1.51
And who is paying the bill? Which states are distributing their hard-earned wealth? Which states are being “punished” for their “success”?
Here’s the top 10 list of States distributing the most wealth to other states:
New Jersey (1) $0.61
Nevada (2) $0.65
Connecticut (3) $0.69
New Hampshire (4) $0.71
Minnesota (5) $0.72
Illinois (6) $0.75
Delaware (7) $0.77
California (8) $0.79
New York (9) $0.79
Colorado (10) $0.81
What’s particularly interesting is that of the 10 biggest deadbeat states, eight are either solid McCain states or leaning McCain states. Conversely, 9 of 10 on the benefactor list are solid or Leaning Obama, with Nevada being a toss-up. I wonder if citizens in former states would be so gung-ho in their condemnation of Obama’s progressive tax policy if McCain was planning on putting THEIR money where HIS mouth is by “fixing” the progressive federal tax policies that have their own states paying “according to its ability and according to its need”?
