Rumor this morning, just mentioned on "Morning Joe," is that Hillary's a "dark-horse" candidate for Secretary of State.
Update: Andrea Mitchell says she's heard the rumor but hears that Hillary is uninterested. Sounds about right to me. So the question becomes: Who's planting the rumor, and why?
Update 2: Just hypothetical answers to the question posed in the update: Lanny Davis? Mark Penn? Bill?? <snark>
Update 3: So. There was something to it, after all. Hmmmm...
I remember going door-to-door in Harrisonburg, VA, one Thursday afternoon in September w/two retired State Department professionals (David, from DC, and Jason, from Manhattan).
David, who has a second home in in Rockingham County not far from the WV border, explained his rationale for supporting Sen. Clinton in the primaries in spite of her 2002 vote on Iraq. He said he believed Hillary projected the requisite toughness for dealing w/Putin.

My canvassing buddy agreed with me when I commented that Obama, too, is a nightmare for Putin in that Barack is a chess-game deep thinker who sees down the road and around the bend much farther than most on the world stage (what David Brooks meant when he praised Obama for his "powers of social perception").
That, plus the fact that he immediately brings to the table a mass following across the globe that the Putins of the world can only dream of.
I must say, though, the idea of Senator Clinton as secretary of state strikes me as profoundly appealing, in an instinctive, first-reaction way...
