Barack Obama spoke after the Iowa caucus last January about ending the politics of fear and division. By that speech, he earned my vote and support. In the months afterwards, he was accused by having only a speech; that his lofty promises had no substance. To the doubters, what is the best thing that Obama can do?—Lead by example.
Joe Lieberman committed the ultimate sin for a Democrat—trash the Democratic nominee on national television at the Republican National Convention. Until a few hours ago I was rooting for Harry Reid to kick him out and show not mercy—dispense with the turncoat. Then I learned that Barack Obama told party officials that he wants Lieberman to remain in the Democratic Caucus. I was taken aback. I considered writing him and letting him know that this supporter was not happy. . .
Then I remembered why I initially supported Barack Obama and why I am glad that this gentleman is President Elect. I had a serious "DUH" moment. To those like myself that are calling for punishment—haven't we had enough of Bush mentality? Obama is leading by example and showing what ending the politics of fear, hate and division looks like in action. This gesture to Liebermann is the perfect tone for President Elect Obama to set. He is demonstrating that he will actually lead like an enlightened leader and that even when a matter involves personal insult, he can rise above the pettiness of revenge for a larger purpose.
You never know, perhaps Lieberman will see firsthand that Obama is a properly confidant man worthy of his respect and support. Such a turnaround would have a positive effect upon the doubters and will do much more for Obama than more partisan pettiness. Even if Lieberman goes back to sniping, Obama will be the winner and Lieberman will look even smaller than he does now.
So to all of the armchair politicians that are screaming for an end to Lieberman’s right to caucus, may I suggest sitting back and watching the healing power of forgiveness, reconciliation and healing. Enjoy what a President Obama has in mind for a new type of politics. Support and trust the man to make the right call here. As for as Homeland Committee chair? Trust the judgment of the man we elected to do the right thing.
Isn’t it wonderful to look forward to a president that actually inspires and can rise above the fray?
