Huffpost and other news sites have been reporting about Senator Clinton possibly being appointed Secretary of State, but also of the impending meeting with Sen. McCain on Monday, and how these appointments of former "enemies" is reminiscent of Lincoln. It's also politically savvy. Karl Rove's promised Permanent Republican Majority didn't outlast one president, but perhaps Obama can strengthen the Dem's opportunity to correct the mistakes of the past.
Bringing Clinton into the mix is not only unconventional as far as recent politics are conserned, it is unthinkable to a Clintonian, and it eliminates the key threat Hillary would continue to impose on the Obama Administration - a challenge in the 2012 election. Hillary is a calculating politician and it would take failure on only one of the extensive issues Obama in which needs to succeed for the Senator to issue a challege in the next election: the Iraq War, the financial crisis, healthcare, etc.
The NYT is reporting here that Obama's lawyers are currently reviewing former President Clinton's finances and other activities in order to identfiy possible conflicts of interest.
But what role would Senator McCain play in an Obama administration? It's hard to see him as being a possible Secretary of Defense, given the disparity between their views on Iraq, but perhaps a post at Homeland Security given McCain's credentials and military background. However, Homeland Security could remain a relic from the Bush Administration: a bloated an ineffective administration that has a low return on investment ratio.
