I started reading the Newsweek reporting, the one that they promised to keep secret until after the election, and there seem to be some inconsistencies.
I have put some non-matching quotes below the fold.
[Please don't start with telling me I should show more respect again...]
Obama apparently thinking about running in 2005/2006:
That November of 2005, at dinner at a fancy Italian restaurant in Washington, former Senate majority leader Tom Daschle had reminded Obama that he had never really been attacked before.
At Coretta Scott King's funeral in early 2006, Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert Kennedy, leaned over to him and whispered, "The torch is being passed to you."
Obama definitely running on November 8, 2006:
Obama had laid out his vision for the campaign on the day after the midterm elections in 2006. [November 7, 2006.] [...] He had met in a small, dimly lit conference room in the office of Axelrod's consulting firm in Chicago with his inner circle: Michelle, ...
Obama not even dreaming about running in November 2006:
In November 2006, Craig sat next to George Stevens, an old friend of the Robert Kennedy clan, at another Obama speech. Stevens leaned over to Craig and said, "What do you think of this guy for president? I haven't heard anybody like this since Bobby Kennedy." Craig instantly replied, "Sign me up." Stevens and Craig approached Obama coming out of the speech and asked, "What are you doing in 2008?" Obama gave them a big grin and said, "Oh, man, it wasn't that good."
The Newsweek article goes on to discuss a Christmas vacation that the Obamas took, during which apparently Michelle gave her consent to run. Seems a bit late, after already laying out his vision of the campaign on November 8... Wouldn't they have discussed it earlier?
I just find it a bit strange for Newsweek to publish the story like this. Much of the story is also not in chronological order, so that you do not notice these discrepancies immediately. But on the other hand, they had essentially a year to work on this story and an editor should have noticed!
