I've got a crazy idea. And if the first 5 commentors hate it I'll delete this diary and we'll never speak of it again.
What if everyone went to iTunes and downloaded Laura Nyro's "Save the Country". Either her version or The Fifth Dimensions' cover. Either way- the lyrics are powerful.
Not only could it show up on iTunes top songs list which would be inspiring and cause a stir (depending on when iTunes updates their list) but it is also a song that we should be playing, singing and sending out into the universe tomorrow.
These lyrics were written 40 years ago, and how appropriate they still are today:
Come on, people! Come on, children!
There's a king at the glory river.
And the precious king, he loved the people to sing;
Babes in the blinkin' sun sang
"We Shall Overcome".
Brings me to tears just about everytime:
I got fury in my soul, fury's gonna take me to the glory goal.
In my mind I can't study war no more.
Save the people! Save the children! Save the country now!
Fury in my soul. I can't study war no more. Save the country.
And if this doesn't give you tears, goosebumps or something then I don't know what to say:
We could build the dream with love, I know,
We could build the dream with love, I know,
We could build a dream with love, children,
We could build the dream with love, oh people,
We could build the dream with love, I know,
We could build the dream with love.
Obama's campaign has been built on love not hate.
Laura Nyro was a singer most popular in the 60's and 70's, but perhaps had more success as a composer/lyricist. She died in 1997 at age 49.
Per Wikipedia (and I confirmed elsewhere):
She wrote this song in June 1968, just a couple of days after Robert F. Kennedy had been assassinated.
Save the people. Save the children. Save the country now.
Sing it loud.
