Well, I'm housesitting in Hawaii. I'll be here through early March.
Here's an update since last informing you of my mother's passing.

And then today, a bombshell was dropped on me...
***UPDATE***
Well after talking to SS, it turns out Wachovia paid the money back to them. So now I have to call Wachovia and talk to them. And considering how their financial situation has been as of late, I doubt this will go swimmingly. I'll keep you all informed.

Well, today in the mail I received a letter from the Treasury Department via Wachovia. A cheerful little piece of misery called a Notice of Reclamation, wanting the $775 of SS that was deposited in my mother's bank account on October 3rd. I know they have no way of knowing it, but those funds were used for rent on the house and bill paying so that I could still reside there for the time being and so my sister and I could finish putting the proper affairs in order.
They want me to remit in 10 days. I spoke with my sister and all I can think to do is, when Kris returns (he'll be back in about 12 days, actually), get a job (as he and I'd discussed), and work out some type of payment plan. Other than that, the only other option I can think of, in lieu of them garnishing my bank account or seeking a judgment against me, is to allow them to take the funds from my income tax return and/or the impending new stimulus check, as what very little funds I do have left have to be spent on the storage space (with my baby book and other childhood items, among other things) I have in Savannah.
So, as you can plainly see, this is not something that was even remotely on my radar at the time, as my emotions were superceding all other functions, cognitive and otherwise. Perhaps I shouldn't have left a forwarding address, eh? ;) Just kidding. I did have some people in Savannah who needed to know my new temporary address. I tell you, everytime I think I'm getting my head above water, someone comes along to dunk my head back under, it seems.
