The cheese has been moved. No one wants to admit it, but the status quo is over. The chickens have come home to roost. In actuality, the vultures are circling. Why? Because true change won't happen. The only changes that could actually have some effect are too enormous to contemplate by "sane" individuals.
For your enjoyment, I've composed a partial list of things that will never fly, just for fun and you'll find them below.
Economics. Let Wall St. burn. No more bailouts. Wall street has already decimated the earnings and retirement funds of normal folks. For the most part, it's over. The only reason to continue to throw cash into the incinerator is to save the idle rich. Then pose the question. What further use is the NYSE? Instead, support our credit unions and institutional thrifts that avoided the junk paper and are still quite solvent. Companies won't get to go "public" anymore what with the demise of the stock exchange, which is good. They might not ever get to be "to big to fail". What benefits do huge corporations bring the ordinary citizen? What enormous drawbacks do they represent?
Military spending. A major cause of our money problems stems from a totally financed war. Why do we need over 700 bases worldwide. Why do we still have service people in Korea, Germany, Iraq, Afganistan? Why do we have seven nuclear powered battle groups roaming the seas and plans for more sophisticated weaponry being built this minute? Wouldn't it be better to provide for our Coast Guard and Home Defense units and have not one armed American overseas? What did happen to that "peace dividend?". I think the Pentagon might be of use to the Smithsonian, or perhaps as surplus office space, but we certainly don't need near this much military anymore.
Governance. Our Founding Fathers didn't envision the country being this large, this populated or diverse. With the current antiquated system, nothing gets done, except for the benefit of the chosen few. It's amazing how fast corporations get their wants attended to immediately, while even modest proposals that benefit the citizenry languish forever in committees. I think semi autonomous regional authority might streamline the political system. No more private lobbyists, presidents, political parties or Congresses. Five regions with single term governors, popularly elected, that can just as easily be recalled should they prove inept or incapable of doing the people's bidding. No more individual states, to much replication of efforts.
Healthcare. Single payer, no insurance company involvement. How can it be more simple? Look to France and emulate.
Transportation. Electrify and rebuild surface mass trans in every township and municipality and relink cities as they were prior to 1948. Airlines are another doomed industry. Let's get started now to replace this terrible industry with quiet comfortable electric trains. They don't have to be high speed, just numerous.
Re- industrialize. We've exported not only our jobs but our factories. As a debtor nation, we're going to have to make our own clothes, toasters and power tools once again. There's only a limited time left to do this before we no longer have the reserve currency status. Once we lose that privilege, no one will finance our debt and imports will dry up rapidly.
These are just a few of the salient features of many that could be changed if our "leaders" were truly serious about change. I could write books and just might. Unemployed folks have lots of time! Admittedly, the vested interests will never let any of this happen, but I wanted to portray some alternatives in a quick post.
