When I woke up today I took a moment to reflect upon what we, as a nation, have to be thankful for this year. Its true that much in our world has gone from bad to worse over the past several months. Banking institutions which once seemed as solid as rocks now seem to have the consistency of tissue paper. The old saying, "What's good for GM is good for the US" now seems as ludicrous to our ears as the words which were once used as a slur, "Made in Japan." And just when it seemed as though we might be getting a handle on this global economy thing, the greatest worldwide financial collapse since the Great Depressions hit us and scrambled the game board's playing pieces.
And yet, I reminded myself, we have much to be Thankful for as well. Despite the dramatic plunge in gasoline prices (which seem to be the new barometer for our economy--down is bad up is good) Americans actually seem to have been scared enough over the past couple of years to finally halt their love affair with gas guzzling SUV's. Perhaps Al Gore's warning hasn't fallen on deaf ears. Maybe America will rise up to produce a new "Greatest Generation" which will be able to face and conquer the science fictional challenges of the 21st century.
And maybe, just maybe, we've managed to elect the right man for the job of leading our nation and our world forward into the 21st centurty. American ends with "I CAN" (corny, but true) and as we wait for our new, young president to seize the reins of power, I leave you with the video essay below--because I really do know what"The Best Feeling in the World" is, and I challenge you to prove me wrong on this Thanksgiving Holiday.
