While Americans are trampling each other in stores across the country thanks to the greed permeating our society, some noble college kids have forgone Thanksgiving with their families and forgone their holiday shopping to travel to Georgia to fight for one last Senate seat. After arriving, however, they have found that they are coming up short -- they need more help on the ground, and we can make that happen right now, right here, from where we sit, today.
I've been talking to an organizer today on the ground in Georgia for Martin, and I was really inspired by the efforts of these kids, and I think you all will be too.
22 California College Democrats (who trained and got experience through the Obama campaign) want to spend the critical week before semester finals in Georgia helping Jim Martin -- jepardizing their future to ensure a better future for America. Now, I don't necessarily approve of sacrificing education, but these kids are practicing the country first meme that the other side only talks about.
In the past 2 weeks, these kids raised $3,000 to send 10 of them to Georgia. They bought 5 plane tickets. They are down to 7 who need help to make it to Georgia. If a bunch of broke college kids can raise $3,000, then kossacks should be able to $5,500 to get the remaining 7 to Georgia.
Please donate now to help get those last 7 to Georgia. Your money will pay for plane tickets or to reimburse gas.
The Georgia Secretary of State is projecting only 15 percent turnout statewide for this election. Our Jim Martin is being outspent on the air by Saxby "Shameless" Chambliss. To win, we must educate and motivate Obama supporters to mobilize one more time -- the best way to do that is to knock on doors, and for that we need boots on the ground.
More than 100 trained, experienced Obama field organizers have arrived in Georgia. They really deserve (and probably want) a hard-earned vacation, but they are working their hearts out for Jim Martin instead. They are only getting a $250 stipend (not even enough to cover basic expenses), but they came anyway because they believe in this cause.
I just talked to one of those organizers, and he's tired and hungry and really ready to rest, but he's not taking a break yet. He's spending his holiday working for a better future for us. After spending a year working night and day for the Obama campaign, he says his job is not over yet. But he needs more volunteers -- and he's got plenty who want to come but are tapped out after putting everything they had into their travels for the Obama campaign.
There are lots of trained organizers and out-of-state volunteers who have contacted the Martin's campaign. They want to come down to canvass. They have committed to staying through the entire GOTV campaign. Door knocks make the difference in a tight race like this one. Your donation will give these door knocks directly to Jim Martin.
Max Stahl worked in 10 states organizing for Obama (NH, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Misssissippi, PA, NC, IN, MO, GA). Many of the canvassers brought to Georgia by these donations will be going to the Northeast suburbs of Atlanta where he is GOTV lead. His biggest county is Gwinnett County, which is the Number 1 source of Republican votes and the Number 4 source of Democratic votes. This territory is critical. If Jim Martin wins Gwinnett County, then he likely wins the race.
They need a great GOTV in Gwinnett to win it, though. Republicans there are fired up over the Fair Tax, and the Republicans will come out for Saxby "Shameless" Chambliss on that issue alone. Mike Huckabee, a Southern hero, did a Fair Tax rally in Gwinnett County last week. This county is the battleground, and you can help win it by helping committed, trained, experienced volunteers get there.
The business my husband and I own has been slow due to the economic downturn, but we're donating to this cause anyway because we know that a better future will only come if we're all willing to sacrifice a little bit today to create a better tomorrow. We started by electing Obama, we can finish by helping to elect Jim Martin.
The Jim Martin race is our last chance to change the face of Congress in 2008. Donating to help this campaign is something real and constructive, and will help build a more progressive future. DailyKos should be able to raise at least as much as a bunch of starving college students. Yes we can! Please give now. Only $5,500 -- come on kossacks, we can do this.
