I've never been to Minnesota, save a few layovers in the airport and weekly visits to Lake Wobegone with Garrison Keeler on Saturday afternoons. I was born and raised in New Jersey, went to college in Maryland, and have lived in Chicago (where my parents were born and raised) for four years. I'm marrying a Chicagoan who went to school in Wisconsin. I have friends from Iowa, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina... all over. And no one can explain to me why Michelle Bachmann defeated El Tinklenberg on Tuesday and remains a member of the U.S. Congress.
So I'm hoping some Minnesotans can help me.
I thought John McCain's (and more aptly, Sarah Palin's) defeat on Tuesday meant that Americans rejected the "pro-American, anti-American" rhetoric Michelle Bachmann coughs up on command. Minnesota went for Obama. But they also went for Bachmann. And the jury is still out on Norm Coleman's Senate seat.
How can any voter support Obama AND Bachmann? Where does the Venn diagram intersect? One candidate sees one America, another sees people like her and terrorist-sympathizers.
One is a practicing Christian, one preaches Christianity. One loves his whole country, the other loves the "patriotic" parts.
I'm just looking for some sort of explanation here. If you can help me out, it'd be much appreciated, dontcha know.
