Granted, there aren't a lot of puppies in shelters. But how great would that be if the Obama's walked into a shelter and picked out their new dog.
And, it's National Animal Shelter Appreciation week.
Each year millions of dogs and cats are put to sleep in shelters. When I tell people this, the reaction is always: "really?"
Yes. MILLIONS of animals killed every year (and I have yet to find a definitive number, anywhere from 3-9 million). No, the animals aren't sick. Or old. There's just too many.
When asked about animal rights during a town hall in February:
Obama responded that he cares about animal rights very much, "not only because I have a 9-year-old and 6-year-old who want a dog." He said he sponsored a bill to prevent horse slaughter in the Illinois state Senate and has been repeatedly endorsed by the Humane Society.
"I think how we treat our animals reflects how we treat each other," he said. "And it's very important that we have a president who is mindful of the cruelty that is perpetrated on animals."

On Tuesday California passed Prop. 2, which requires better conditions for farm animals. (I know- yet they reject humans with Prop. 8)
This gives me hope as this may mean people are catching on- you don't have to give up your hamburgers to care about animals! Compassion.
Maybe Oprah can give the Obamas advice on getting their new puppy. After this organization put up a billboard on Oprah's way to work, she has been more aware of the puppy mill situation and has done a few shows on the subject.
Sign this card thanking the Obama's for considering adoption. I don't think it is confirmed they will get a shelter dog over a dog from a breeder or pet store, but hopefully they will consider saving a shelter dog.
