In an age where the past haunts us during almost everything we do, we have elected an African-American individual president. What does that mean? Does it mean that we have moved ahead in the Game of Life? In the grocery store, as I pass the magazine stands, I see Obama on the cover of each major publication, declaring that history has been made. The history of our nation has been bloodied and damaged by our treatment of persons of color to the point that even today we have to ask ourselves "is this a good idea?" The answer is, of course.
As I trolled through the cable channels, I came across Spencer Tracy in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" a move that I have always called a favorite. Today, however, was different. I had previously watched the film as an affirmation of what we could accomplish with our thinking. Today, the movie seemed outdated, behind the times. Watching the film, everything seemed normal, like this is how it should be, that this is life, that everything is normal again. I felt happy to watch it within the context of the history that we are experiencing.
It took a few days for Obama's victory to truly sink in, but seeing a few minutes of this film has solidified for me that we have taken a substantial step forward in our humanity.
