I'm just writing down an some thoughts that I'm hoping might give people a little bit of perspective on things. This is an experience I'm sure is being shared by a lot of people in our country right now...
I was just reading about the people who are angry about Rick Warren giving the invocation. I thought about it for a minute, but really, I can't bring myself to care.
I found out Friday that I'm getting laid off. My entire office is being cut at the end of March. I'm grateful that my boss was nice enough to give us advance warning when he found out. I doubt many people in similar situations were given the same consideration.
My father is the sales manager at a Saturn dealership. He has sold 2 cars this month. He's struggling to pay the mortgage. He had to let the receptionist go last week, one of several cuts they've had to make to try and survive through the recession.
And you know what? Compared to a lot of people, we have it pretty good. There are a lot of my fellow Americans in a lot worse condition.
Our Vice President just admitted to committing war crimes, and seemed fairly certain he was not putting himself at any risk by doing so. We still have tens of thousands of troops overseas in harms way. Wall St. banks are taking our hundreds of billions of dollars worth of emergency government loans and using them to pay dividends to their shareholders instead of lending the money to revitalize the economy. Terrorists killed hundreds in India this month. Our economy is dangling on the verge of depression.
But did you hear that a conservative preacher is giving the invocation? Man, that is something to get outraged about!!!
...
Listen, I understand that Rick Warren's views on several issues are horrible. I'm not here to defend Rick Warren, I think his views are horrible too. And if I ever met him, I would give him an earful about his hateful beliefs and how destructive they are to society.
But last time I checked, Rick Warren is about the least of our problems. Can we please stop getting worked up over the least of our problems? We have real, honest to god problems to worry about here, and we're never going to accomplish anything if we are so very easily distracted.
Get some freaking perspective. I'm pretty sure no one will remember or care who gave the invocation at the inauguration in 10 years, but they sure as hell will remember and care about our other problems, and what we do about them.
