First the bad. Mike Coffman, Republican Secretary of State in Colorado since 2006, was elected to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives from Colorado's 6th District on Nov. 4th. A staunch Republican, he came under frequent fire as Secretary of State for botching elections as well as questionable practices as State Treasurer before that.
But every cloud has a silver lining. Today, Gov. Bill Ritter appointed Democratic Rep. Bernie Buescher as Colorado's new Secretary of State. A Democratic state Representative out of Grand Junction, Buescher will serve as an advocate for free and fair elections in the State of Colorado. He was defeated last month for his state seat by a Republican, therefore making him eligible for the appointment.
"I am excited about the opportunity to give Colorado voters confidence that we have the highest-caliber, most transparent and most efficient elections possible," Buescher said. "I am equally excited about working with the business community to improve the ease and utility of the business filing side of the Secretary of State's Office.
