I want to offer this point to enhance the discussions here about both Caroline Kennedy and the gay marriage movement. In short, Caroline Kennedy has publicly staked out a firm position in favor of gay marriage rights.
By the way, if anyone has recently posted on this (I've checked and didn't find anything) I'll pull this diary.
To quote from Politico's questionnaire of Kennedy (an aide drafted the responses to the eight-question list):
QUESTION 2: Same-sex marriage. Do you support the right of gay and lesbian couples to marry? Do you think it's appropriate that Rick Warren, who campaigned to ban gay marriage, is delivering the invocation at Obama's inauguration? If not, have you expressed that to the president-elect?
ANSWER: "Caroline supports full equality and marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples."
I found this out through The Field, which I check every week or so in the throes of my election withdrawal symptoms.
Al Giordano continues:
For me it's no mystery how Caroline Kennedy will vote in the Senate - pretty closely to how Ted Kennedy has voted, which means very progressively. I conclude that based on years of reporting on Massachusetts politics (full time from 1988-1996) including of course on the Kennedys and watching the dynamics inside that family including between Teddy and Caroline, and the central role she played in his political organization. They pretty much speak with one voice.
It was no surprise, to me, that Caroline answered recent questions in favor of gay marriage, because that has also been Ted's position for years now. Which is to say, he earns a 100 percent rating from the NAACP, 100 percent from the AFL-CIO, 100 percent from the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL), 100 percent by Peace Action-SANE, 89 percent from the League of Conservation Voters, and - his unparalleled leadership toward national health care earns him a 100 percent rating from the American Public Health Association. Anyway, you get the point.
The more open and direct advocates we have for equality for all American citizens, the better off we will all be. Every. Single. Person. in this country deserves the same rights and privileges as everyone else. Period.
As much as I dislike forking over national elective offices to scions of political families, I guess I'm a little less uncomfortable with Caroline Kennedy than I was previously.
Discuss.
***EDITORIAL NOTE*** Al Giordano really does make a strong case for Caroline. I strongly recommend going over there and reading it (here's another link for your convenience). Then, if you have time, come back and let us know what you think.
